Happy NEW YEAR friends!! I always feel like there is so much excitement that comes with a new year. Anticipation for what the new year holds, and the possibilities of a fresh start. I have spent the last week purging and cleaning. Going through areas in our house that have collected piles over the past year, who am I kidding the past few years. Some areas get re-visited more than others, and some areas stay neglected for a little while. I feel like I’ve been pretty productive though, going through clothes I haven’t worn in the past year. Did you know I got rid of about 20 belts?! I mean who really wears that many? I weeded it down to the 3 I wear the most, and the rest went in the bag to donate. It feels so good! I also got rid of about a dozen pairs of shoes. I can actually see the floor in my closet! Seriously, I forgot what it looked like. It feels so good to clean things out. I organized my spice cabinets for the first time since we moved in – YIKES! [Read more…]
Hi Friends! I wanted to share some of my thoughts and ideas for my christmas decor this year. I know you usually see just the after photos, but I wanted to share some of my thought process and inspiration with you. Sometimes just sharing the journey to how we get to the pretty spaces is more meaningful than the finished product itself. I tend to stick to a mostly neutral color palette to begin with. And while I love that, and I loved our Christmas decor last year, at the end of the day it felt like it was missing something. I know sounds weird right? [Read more…]
Can we chat for a minute. Just friend to friend?! Life is hard. There I said it. I know in the world of social media, we are filled to the brim with everyone else’s highlight reel, it can make our own lives feel – well uneventful. Like if we aren’t trying the hippest restaurant in town, or the latest beauty regiment, or have picture perfect children at every moment, who never have outbursts, and always look put together, and don’t shout out in the grocery store “SOMEONE FARTED”. We can loose ourselves sometimes getting caught up in all we aren’t doing, and forget to rest in the fact that we are imperfect people, living in a messed up crazy world, and not every moment looks like it came straight out of a Hallmark movie. Phew! I’m glad I got that off my chest. [Read more…]
I had a completely different post planned for today, but when Facebook pops up in your feed with a memory from 5 years ago, I knew I wanted to share that instead. Not because I want to boast on how far I’ve come, but it’s important to look back on where we have come from. To take a moment and soak in the hard work and time we’ve invested to get to where we are today. You’ve heard the expression “Rome wasn’t built in a day” and I think the same is definitely true in blogging. I’ve shared my thoughts about comparison HERE, and nothing can wreck you more in the blogging industry than comparing yourself to someone else’s accomplishments. I think it’s so important that we take a moment, and stop to look back and see just how far we’ve come. Not only does it help give us a sense of accomplishment, but it propels us into moving forward with fresh motivation.
It’s really hard not to compare these days. With social media slamming everyone else success’s in our faces, we can easily fall into the trap of comparison without even realizing it. We go from cheering someone on, to slowly starting a downward spin cycle of feelings that tell us we’re “not good enough” or success will never happen for our own personsal goals. So how do we celebrate with someone, or even scroll through social media, without letting those feelings start to consume us. I think what makes it tricky, is that some days we can have a good grip on it, but on others, we can fall prey to its trap. It’s not like we don’t want to be happy for other people, or share in the joy of their success, but in a culture where we share every detail from what we ate to how we dressed that day, how do we keep those feelings of comparison from rising up? I would be lying to you if I said I had this completely figured out. I don’t. I struggle with these very feelings, where normally I would be your biggest cheerleader and sharing in every bit of your excitement, I have times where I can’t help but look at myself and think of everything that I’m NOT doing.
I know I’m not the only one who has gone in to a Target store for a few items, and magically some new throw pillows, and a the latest trinket end up in my cart. Yep – GUILTY! So I happened to make one of those infamous Target runs on Monday, and tried so very, very hard to only get the items on my list. Of course I had a million “squirrel” moments, when some of their home decor items tried to entice me, tried to lure me in and derail my kart. But I held on tight, and stayed on course, lol. However a girl does glance, so today I’m sharing with you some favorite home decor find at Target right now! [Read more…]
I think we can all raise our hand in agreement that at one time or another we have been in Target and left with more than we anticipated buying! I for one have to avoid that place some times for that reason alone. So many times though #targetdoesitagain and hits the nail on the head for their decor. We all know the feeling in the store, but have you shopped Target online lately? I was browsing their site the other day for a client, and while I have felt over the last few years Target has upped their game in the home decor department, I was surprised at everything they offer online now. So instead of keeping all these goodies to myself, I wanted to share with you 10 trendiest lights from Target! [Read more…]
I will be the first to admit, awhile back when I thought about decorating with wall paper I immediately thought of the 70’s and 80’s wall paper that we instantly remove when updating a space. However, wallpaper has come a long way, and can also be the easiest way to add your own personal signature to your space. Whether it’s permanent or removable, there are a lot of options with wall paper now. It’s no longer that dated wall covering we all cringe at the sight of. I know there are still some people who stop me dead in my tracks if I mention adding wall paper, so I wanted to do a round up and show you some beautiful ways wall paper can be added to enhance your decor. I also have a FUN giveaway at the end with Graham & Brown wallpaper, so stay tuned!! [Read more…]
So I’m taking a break from the pink today, and if this is your first time here, or you haven’t been in awhile, I apologize! I shared our daughters room makeover, HERE, and as much as I love it, I feel like all I have seen lately is pink, ha ha! So I thought I would share a recent mood board I did for a client, because it’s not one that I typically do. Don’t get me wrong I love what I do, and helping clients decorate their homes into spaces they love is especially important for me. Every once and awhile though I will get a client whose style is not your typical farmhouse feel with white slipcovers, but stretches my design muscles, in a good way! Trust me I love decorating in my style house, it’s my favorite thing to do, but every now and then it’s fun to step outside the norm. [Read more…]
Last week we talked about the importance of home decor, and how it’s more than just having a pretty space, but how the items we bring into our home can nourish our souls and spark our creativity. Today I’m going to share a great place to find art for your walls. If you haven’t been around here for a little while, you may not know this, but I have a love for gallery walls. Maybe more like an obsession! I often get asked by clients what they should fill their frames with when they hang them on their walls. My first go to would be family photos, but you don’t want to go overboard. Hanging art on your walls is a great way to show everyone your personality and style. So this week we are going to tour all around our house as I show you different ways to decorate your walls, but first I’m going to show you some amazing prints, and a fun giveaway too! [Read more…]
Hi friends! It feels so good to be back! Back you say?! For those of you that are regular readers around here, you may have noticed my absence last week. Our entire family came down with the worst sick bug we have experienced to date! The hubby used some of his first sick days in 10 years, and we all looked like death warmed over. Thankfully we are on the road to recovery now, but even yesterday I was still feeling over taken by the sickness, and wondered if and when this nasty virus was ever going to leave! While being sick is never easy – I mean who likes to involuntarily stop in their tracks while their body tries to fight off disease. By day 2 I tried to embrace the inevitable and realize my body needed some rest. While I was laying on our couch, getting the much needed rest my body was requiring, I couldn’t help but look around our living spaces and do some reflecting. [Read more…]
If you are stopping by from Diane at In My Own Style, then welcome!! I’m joining some pretty amazingly talented bloggers this week for a fun little tour along with some questions we will all be answering. To be honest, I feel a little star struck to be in this group, and a whole – lotta gratitude to be among some amazing people, that inspire me on my own blogging journey. The one thing we all have in common is we will be at Haven this year! One thing that is new to the conference this year, is this crazy talented group of bloggers called Haven Mentors. [Read more…]
Why is it that trying to finish the decor in a space can be so frustrating?! You have an idea, a plan, a vision, but sometimes seeing the completed vision of that space come to fruition takes a while. I know I’ve shared before about taking risks, and being ok with making mistakes when decorating your spaces before, and it’s all apart of this thing called “process”. We don’t talk a lot about the process, or always show what that process looks like. Who doesn’t love a good Before & After, but it’s rare we see how we got from the Before to the After. And what happens if you get stuck in the middle? I think the same can be said about life sometimes. We start out with a plan or a dream, and things don’t always go as planned, or so we think. Could it be that we are just stuck in the middle somewhere? The process. [Read more…]
Do you have a hard time decorating your kitchen? Whether you struggle will wall space, or countertop space, decorating your kitchen doesn’t have to be tricky. Since your kitchen is one of the hardest working rooms in your house, incorporating decor that is not only pretty but functional is key! Who wants to waste needed countertop space with items that just collect dust? Decorating your kitchen doesn’t have to be tricky, the key is picking pieces that are pretty and that work for you. A staple on our island is always our farmhouse mug drying rack. I love that it adds the farmhouse feel with decor, but also works for us. It’s a great way to display pretty mugs and cups, that are at a hands reach, and frees up much needed cabinet space for other “not so pretty” items. [Read more…]
I mentioned at the end of yesterdays post that I was craving a more simpler look around our home. I wouldn’t say I’m a pack rack when it comes to decor, but I’m certainly no minimalist either. I remember reading a post the Nester did a few years back (ok WOW I just looked, that post was written 6 years ago – SIX!) about quieting the home. She called herself the Coco Chanel of Home Accents, and it still makes me chuckle. But I remember reading her post and feeling a slight panic at the thought of putting away all my home decor accessories for a cleaner, quieter look. However this past fall I found myself craving to do the same thing. Yet with Christmas right around the corner, it was not the time to be putting things away 🙂 [Read more…]
