After sharing my heart a bit here on the blog, I’ve heard from quite a few of you how encouraged you are to pursue your dream. Maybe it’s starting your own blog? Or opening up a shop, or starting your own business. And maybe it’s knowing when to close some doors on one end, because that season is over, and new doors are about to open. For whatever reason I’ve felt inspired to share my heart ramblings on this subject, even though I don’t quite feel equipped too sometimes. Yet, I know God uses it. My vulnerability on the subject, just sharing some simple encouragement because I was once in those shoes myself, and if I’m being honest with myself, there are times I still am. Needing simple encouragement to keep going, to press on, to take the leap, to not be afraid. [Read more…]
Do you remember the first Pinterest project you tried? You know the one that had all the promise in the world of delivering, and making you feel like you were on top of the world. The one where your kids stand in awe, and your husband is so impressed he does the dishes after dinner?! I was so relieved once I started seeing people post their “Pinterest Fails”. Like literally, deep exhale of all that striving and thinking “you can do this”, just to have a complete and utter failure of a project sitting in front of you staring back at you in all of it’s ugliness. Yeah… one of those moments. I have seriously had my fair share of pinterest fails. A so close to amazing project that ended up just being a complete bomb. It was hard to think of one that stuck out more than the other. I remember this time I thought I could free hand paint a vintage looking sign on this amazing piece of old barn wood. [Read more…]
It’s funny, looking back, how clearly I can remember always wanting to be a mom. I can remember being asked as a young girl, and early teenager what I wanted to do when I grew up, and my answer was simple, “be a mom”. It wasn’t until I was in high school that that answer was no longer the only answer people would accept. I would get responses like “yes you can be a mom, but what else do you want to do?” or “Of course you will be a mom, but what do you want to do for a career”. Even though their question changed, my answer still stayed the same. To the point that when it came time to start thinking about college, I boldly told my parents I didn’t need to go to college because I was going to get married and be a mom. This was without a potential husband on the scene as well. I was confident in it. I was drawn to it, and something inside me felt peace about it, contentment, almost like it settled me. Yes I had always secretly wanted to become an interior designer, but at the time going to school for that was out of reach, and I doubted myself very much. Especially seeing how I didn’t have my own home or money to decorate with. [Read more…]
Hi friends! How are you today!! I’ve been sharing a bit from the heart lately, and well, I just can’t move on until it stops weighing so heavy. I hope that’s ok. And please know I’m not changing my blogging focus from Home Decor, but I think it’s important to share multiple aspects that happen to inspire life. Recently I’ve shared with you the importance of “Doing What You Love”. And how vital that is as a creative soul, a person, to make sure that life doesn’t stifle us to the point where we feel uninspired to do much of anything. Then I shared with you the “Nastiest 4 Letter Word” that we can all fall prey to every now and again- FEAR. It’s a dream crusher, and can cripple even the most daring risk taker. There’s another aspect of pursuing your dreams that I haven’t mentioned yet. It’s not quite as crippling as FEAR, but it can still stop us in our tracks if we aren’t careful – the “NAY-Sayers”. [Read more…]
I know I know, there are a lot of bad 4 letter words out there. It’s hard to believe there is one that is the nastiest of all. But to a creative soul, a dreamer, the one stepping out on the water with extreme faith and courage, there is one 4 letter word that can leave us paralyzed right where we are. It begins with the letter “F”, and no I’m not talking about the one that rhymes with “truck”. FEAR.
It’s so important as a creative person to take time to do what you love. That might seem like a no-brainer at first, but life’s demands have a way of creeping in and stealing us away from the things we love to do the most. Before we know it we are running at a break-neck pace with little or no time to refresh ourselves. The downside to this is we end up running out of creative juices. I’m not talking about burn-out, because that is an entirely different beast in itself, although if we aren’t careful we might end up there too! I’m talking about when the creative pool runs dry. We are left feeling unmotivated and uninspired to create or put our hands into any project. I found myself feeling this way as the new year began. [Read more…]
I’ve been contemplating something for quite a while. Well stewing over it more or less. This week I finally said the words out loud, and there is something about verbalizing a thought out loud that makes your decision that much clearer. For me it brought confirmation, because instead of hesitation or adding more questions, it brought peace. And that was all the reassurance I needed. Let me rewind. [Read more…]
Hello Friends!! I’m alive!! I still feel like I’m coming down from being on cloud 9 after our Better Homes & Gardens christmas photoshoot. This was the 3rd time we’ve had a magazine come to our house to do a photoshoot, the first time for BH&G, and even though I felt more like having a 3rd child, instead of my first, you know where you are a bit more relaxed, not as nervous as the first time. If the binkie falls on the floor you just pick it up, lick it off, and give it back to your baby, lol! Well I started off that way, and then leading to up to the week before they were supposed to come, it was like a whirlwind hit of realizing a major publication will be in my house, IN MY HOUSE, and every square inch needs to be perfect! Happy NEW YEAR friends!! I always feel like there is so much excitement that comes with a new year. Anticipation for what the new year holds, and the possibilities of a fresh start. I have spent the last week purging and cleaning. Going through areas in our house that have collected piles over the past year, who am I kidding the past few years. Some areas get re-visited more than others, and some areas stay neglected for a little while. I feel like I’ve been pretty productive though, going through clothes I haven’t worn in the past year. Did you know I got rid of about 20 belts?! I mean who really wears that many? I weeded it down to the 3 I wear the most, and the rest went in the bag to donate. It feels so good! I also got rid of about a dozen pairs of shoes. I can actually see the floor in my closet! Seriously, I forgot what it looked like. It feels so good to clean things out. I organized my spice cabinets for the first time since we moved in – YIKES! [Read more…]
Have you recovered from Christmas yet? As I speak we are curled up inside watching big white fluffy snowflakes fall, drinking hot chocolate by our wood stove. It’s quite possibly one of my most favorite ways to soak in the winter season, instead of dreading the months of cold weather that lie ahead. As 2016 winds down, I thought I would share with you my favorite thing to buy as we get ready to start another new year! We all go through New Years resolutions, I assure you, this has nothing to do with that! HA! But I do have one simple household item that I absolutely get giddy with excitement to get my hands on! I shared earlier this week on Instagram, that we are keeping our Christmas decor up just a bit longer than normal this year, as I do some final tweaking to get ready for Better Homes & Gardens to come and take pictures for their special edition magazine for Christmas next year. It’s a dream come true and I will be sure to share more on that soon. So in the meantime, while our house still glows of Christmas, there is one thing I can buy that may help tie me over until I decorate for the new year. [Read more…]
Well, it’s that time of year. Where we frantically try to think of something to buy for all of our beloved ones. It truly is a special moment when we know we’ve nailed it in the gifting department, but sometimes we can feel a bit apprehensive, because we just aren’t sure what to buy. Never mind when the question gets turned on us! It’s like all of a sudden that running list of things we have been eye-balling instantly POOF’s from our memory bank, and we have a deer in headlights look on our face, and the only thing that comes out of our mouths is “new socks”. I mean… HELLO, it’s been a long year, you deserve something that will make you feel extra special when you open it on Christmas morning. And while there are some fabulous posts circulating in blog world right now with “Gift Guides” for just about everybody on your list, I’d thought I’d share some of the things I’ve compiled this year, and perhaps if you see something you like, you can pass it along as your Christmas wish list too! Can we chat for a minute. Just friend to friend?! Life is hard. There I said it. I know in the world of social media, we are filled to the brim with everyone else’s highlight reel, it can make our own lives feel – well uneventful. Like if we aren’t trying the hippest restaurant in town, or the latest beauty regiment, or have picture perfect children at every moment, who never have outbursts, and always look put together, and don’t shout out in the grocery store “SOMEONE FARTED”. We can loose ourselves sometimes getting caught up in all we aren’t doing, and forget to rest in the fact that we are imperfect people, living in a messed up crazy world, and not every moment looks like it came straight out of a Hallmark movie. Phew! I’m glad I got that off my chest. [Read more…]
I had a completely different post planned for today, but when Facebook pops up in your feed with a memory from 5 years ago, I knew I wanted to share that instead. Not because I want to boast on how far I’ve come, but it’s important to look back on where we have come from. To take a moment and soak in the hard work and time we’ve invested to get to where we are today. You’ve heard the expression “Rome wasn’t built in a day” and I think the same is definitely true in blogging. I’ve shared my thoughts about comparison HERE, and nothing can wreck you more in the blogging industry than comparing yourself to someone else’s accomplishments. I think it’s so important that we take a moment, and stop to look back and see just how far we’ve come. Not only does it help give us a sense of accomplishment, but it propels us into moving forward with fresh motivation.
I know I don’t usually share outfits or fashion here on the blog. One of my very first posts was about about fashion, and I think that was last. I don’t consider myself a fashionista, but I do like putting outfits together that are go along with my style, and definitely have a soft spot for accessories. I think anyone who has met me would agree, I don’t dress for trendy, but I do like to be comfortably in style. So I put together a little mood board of one of my favorite fall outfits. August is usually about the time I start craving cooler weather so I can bust out my vest and scarves and boots! [Read more…]
It’s really hard not to compare these days. With social media slamming everyone else success’s in our faces, we can easily fall into the trap of comparison without even realizing it. We go from cheering someone on, to slowly starting a downward spin cycle of feelings that tell us we’re “not good enough” or success will never happen for our own personsal goals. So how do we celebrate with someone, or even scroll through social media, without letting those feelings start to consume us. I think what makes it tricky, is that some days we can have a good grip on it, but on others, we can fall prey to its trap. It’s not like we don’t want to be happy for other people, or share in the joy of their success, but in a culture where we share every detail from what we ate to how we dressed that day, how do we keep those feelings of comparison from rising up? I would be lying to you if I said I had this completely figured out. I don’t. I struggle with these very feelings, where normally I would be your biggest cheerleader and sharing in every bit of your excitement, I have times where I can’t help but look at myself and think of everything that I’m NOT doing.
