Painted Porch pt.1

10/09/2011 By Bre

9 Oct

OK. Can I just tell you how excited I am over here. First of all we are having the most gorgeous weekend in Oct. ever =D It is simply beautiful out, and I mean I’m sitting in shorts and a tank top and there is a beautiful breeze, it’s lovely. Well towards the middle of last week (when I became aware of how nice the weather was going to be for the weekend) I thought to myself if you want to get anything done outside, NOW is the time to do so, because it’s just going to get cold from here on out. SO, I thought long and hard, and couldn’t shake the idea out of my head of wanting to paint out farmers porch. Now before you all go “ohhhh” there really isn’t much to it, just 5 posts and a concrete floor. Nothing ornate, or spindly, or time consuming. The trick is to find some good outdoor paint that will last awhile (eventually we want to frame over the concrete and add wood). So I shared my thoughts with the hubby, and we headed to Lowes after morning naptime on sat. I have had black stuck in my head for quite awhile now, and for those of you who know me, it’s the complete opposite of what I love. WHITE WHITE WHITE. If everything could be white that would be ok with me. But I couldn’t shake the black. So on the way to Lowes hubby asks “what color are you thinking for the cement?”,”Black”,”Really?!?!”, “Yeah, why, do you not like that, is that not what you were thinking?”. You get the idea. He was shocked, and so was just  about everybody else I told, but he didn’t care to much about the color and I knew were I was going, because somewhere a long the line years ago, I had seen a black door and floor boards in a pottery barn catalogue, and I LOVED it. There was just something about it, that I couldn’t pull away from. SO, after back and forth’s with the guy at Lowes (seriously guys, can you trust us women when it comes to decor, I know some of you out there have a clue on this, but when it comes down to it, don’t you always end up liking how it comes out anyways?!) he finally delivered my black outdoor paint for concrete. So to give you an idea of what our porch looked like before I inserted a photo to give you an idea.

BEFOR

Not a whole lot going on over here. I really don’t know what the guy was thinking. We had barn red doors (ok, but not in love), this like green (but with hints of dark teal) posts, and a light grey blue porch(which was peeling because they just used any old paint)?!?! Now before you try to wrap your heads around this, our house is all white. I mean ALL WHITE. No shutters (which I love) just a white house with white trim. Totally fine, maybe that’s why they went color crazy.
SO, initially I thought, white posts black floor. I had already painted our two doors, staying away from black, because I didn’t want it to give off the wrong signal (?) and I really wanted black door knobs. So we get home and I start painting the posts white, and YIKES! These posts have been repainted again and again and underneath had all sorts of chippy paint, and the white just made it stick out like a sore thumb. So after painting one, my husband was like “why don’t you just do the posts black” “OK”, no argument over here. I secretly really wanted to, but just wasn’t gusty enough. I toyed for a long time, probably because I do really like white posts on a porch, but with the whole house white you wouldn’t even notice them. So let me give you a little sneak peak of how much I’m loving these black posts 🙂

Well hello handsome. We did finish the whole porch today so I will be posting on that soon, but I just had to sneak in this little photo of what I’m so excited about. AND to let you know I will yet again be painting our front doors. This will be my 4th color since we’ve been here (in six months). At first I was thinking something really dark like black, but more along the slate side of things.. but just haven’t been able to find the right color. Then with how much I’m loving how the porch came out and stumbling across a few photos, I’m deciding to go with it =D And what is that do you think? Take a guess :

YEP… you guessed it BLACK. I know I know… if you can’t picture it, just wait til I show you.. and if you can, then you know how lovely this will be. AND it fits perfectly with the time period of our house circa 1850. So stay tuned I will posting a whole porch makeover asap 🙂
