Hip Hip Hooray it’s Friday!!! We have had outstanding weather this past week. Like perfect, dream of it, no humidity, weather! It could not have been any nicer. And in celebration of it being friday and the weekend being here, I figured it would be fun to do a GIVEAWAY today as well!! So stay tuned at the end of this post for instructions on how to win. Some of you have asked what the hallway looks like at the bottom of our front staircase when I shared our gallery wall. I had mentioned in the before & after posts, in a desperate hope to keep the original paint color we added some board & batten around the front door and to that little hallway. So today I’m going to share a little tutorial with you on how we did that.
To start lets give a round of applause for our lovely before photo :
I feel like you have to say that when pictures are not so hot, because lets face it, this before photo is doing nothing for me. I explained in my previous posts that in attempt to help with how dark our hallway was, we added some board & batten to try and freshen things up. Because nobody really likes re-painting a hallway again, am I right?! We also decided to add some sconces, because there is no light in that tiny coat closet at the end of the hallway, and this mama would get really frustrated trying to find shoes that matched in a hurry, because when you are trying to get out the door with toddlers you are always in a hurry! So we ran some wiring. I say we, it was really just my husband, and this is not a favorite of his to do, so if you ever run in to him, can you just tell him “he’s great” for me, because he puts up with my crazy ideas. {disclaimer – he was an electrician before hand (no longer is) so he is well educated in this, we are not YouTube ammeters} For the horizontal boards we used 1X6’s, and for the vertical boards we used 1X3’s. For the top trim we laid a 1X2 flat, and placed cove moulding trim underneath the overhang to finish it off. We installed these sconces, and after about 4 coats of white paint later we were done. It helped for a little while, but by the time winter came that year, I got the hair across my butt to finally paint the hallway a lighter color. You’ve already seen the before and after of the rest of the hallway, so here is the front door. With the lighter color all around, I was finally able to paint the inside of the front door a darker color. Something I always wanted to do, but with a dark hallway to begin with, and a darker color on the wall, it just wouldn’t have been right. The outside of our doors are painted black, but I didn’t want to go quite black on the inside, so I went with Graphite by Annie Sloan. Now looking inside our front door things are much brighter.
Every summer when we visit the beach I collect driftwood. It’s something I love to decorate with, and it reminds me of summers at the beach every time I see it. The coat rack we made with hooks from Ikea, and a piece of driftwood I picked up 2 years ago. And I am so happy to be sharing this beautiful LifeGuard sign from Barn Owl Primitives. It fits perfectly in that spot, and matches my already beachy theme. It’s from part of their new beach inspired line they just launched, perfect timing for summer. They are 24″ round, and are the perfect statement piece.
