Ummm yes, you are reading that correctly! We got chickens. Well technically we’ve had them, but they’ve never made an official appearance on the blog or Instagram for that matter. You may remember in my previous post I mentioned we made an addition to our family, and by addition I mean 5 tiny, fluffy, cuddly chickens. We always talked about having chickens, but I never thought we would actually take the plunge, but after having them for a few months I’m kicking myself for not doing this sooner. And we haven’t even made it to the egg laying phase yet!
Earlier this spring our sons 1st grade class incubated eggs. The baby chicks hatched just before spring break, and each of the children got to bring home baby chicks. With a signed note of consent from their parents of course. My parents have chickens, so we agreed to let him bring some home with the intent that once they were big enough we would bring them to grandma and grandpa’s house.
Well by dinner time that night we were making plans to keep them, and add to the 3 he brought home from school. To say we were in love, was an understatement. And don’t even get me started on how over the moon the kids were!!
Raising baby chickens is like having a goldfish or a hamster. You feed them, you clean their cage, and that’s about it. Our kids took turns making sure each one was held everyday so that when they became adults they would be friendly chickens. By that weekend we added a few more baby chicks to our bunch, because we figured if we were going to have them, we might as well go all in.
Then this started to happen. This sweet little white chicky started growing a mohawk. I’m not gonna lie at first we thought it was a rooster, and at the same point loved his/her little flat top! It was seriously the cutest thing ever. While as she grew we confirmed she is in fact a “she” and not a rooster, and has the loveliest head of feathers you have ever seen. She’s quite hysterical, and we all go crazy over her. To say she’s the house favorite may be an understatement. One of their favorite spots to hang out happens to be on our porch. They go for the wicker chairs every time, and sit and watch the cars pass by.ย
The chickens are almost 4 months old now and loving life. We are almost done building chateau de’ chickens, or the cutest chicken coop you’ve ever seen. I will be sure to share it with you once were finished, in the meantime the chickens are loving life, free rangingย in our yard, and eating all the bugs they desire.

Oh how sweet these are! I keep “hinting” strongly to my husband about doing the same. Little by little he is getting softer on the idea : )

Hi! The chickens are so cute! Now if only I could convince my husband… ? I see that you have the same wickets chairs outside that I just got. Did you protect yours with anything? Are they easy to clean? We have a bird that does its business on the cushion quite regularly. I’m a bit worried as I am planning to bring them inside in winter. Any tips?
Bre says
Hi Barb! So I didn’t use anything to protect my chairs with. They are pretty easy to wipe down if I need to, however I don’t leave me cushions on them unless we are using the chair. Yes it’s more work to bring them inside each time, but it saves them from any unwanted messes at the end of the day ๐

Oh boy! This is how it all starts, Bre! “If you give a mom a chicken, she’s going to ask you for a compost pile.” This was me eight years ago, now we have a full on homestead. Haha! It is so much for the kids, too. Great job, you are going to love it!
Bre says
Thanks Sarah! Honestly if it were up to me, we would already have goats and sheep too! lol. I’m sure this is just the beginning ๐ I’m loving the free lessons my kids are getting in homesteading as well ๐

What type of chicken do you think Bruce is? She is a beauty!!
Bre says
I looked her up online and believe she is a Spitzhauben Chicken, which are a breed from Switzerland. I would love to get my hands on some more like her. Fingers are crossed for when my daughter does the same thing in first grade we will get more ๐

Okay, I have to ask….. what about the poop issue? I’ve always wanted chickens, but my husband insists they are too dirty and attract rodents. Ew. But they’re so darn cute! And that mohawk? I die.
Bre says
So we hose down our porch every once in awhile. Not daily, but lets just say more than the once a summer we used to before, lol! It’s really not that bad. I haven’t noticed any new rodents, but more flies, but nothing over the top. I’d say they are still worth it in my book! Thanks!

hey girl love the post! My sister and her family (they live in Malvern,AR) have had chickens for a couple of years now I guess! The boys take care of them ( ages 12,10 and 6) They also have rabbits to! I think the boys really enjoy them especially the 10 year old!

Haha!! I love that your chicken has a fascinator! Maybe you should call her Princess Kate!

Bre – I love your post about your chickens, especially the white one with the mohawk. Too cute! At our last house, our neighbors had chickens. They were such fun to watch.

Hi Bre Too cute!!

LOVE them! that mohwak is awesome! so…. we shared our chickens on the blog a few weeks ago and then we had tragedy strike. we had built the coop ourselves and left a gap for ventilation as we were supposed to according to the plans. a raccoon got in and killed three one night, eating just one. it came back two nights later and wiped us out (we had 6). i was devastated and horrified. a week later i secured that part of the coop with steel mesh and we got 5 new hens. they’re surviving now with no issues and it was a hard learned lesson for us. i only tell you this because we didn’t think about that ventilation gap, so just in case… we are headed to another poultry swap in a few weeks and going to get some more. ๐
Bre says
ohhh Cassie, I am so sorry to hear that ๐ That is crazy about the raccoon!! My husband put the a ventilation gap as well, but use the steel mesh, and I’m giving him a hard time because I’m thinking there is NO WAY something would crawl in there. Well glad to know he used his common sense and not mine! LOL. Thanks for sharing, so sorry you had to find out the hard way ๐
