I think it’s inevitable that with every start to a new year comes time for reflection on last year, and some time to look forward in hopes of what the new year might hold. Since I’ve taken a look back on 2017, and all that we accomplished, and I’ve shared with you my most popular posts of 2017, it’s time to dream about what 2018 will bring. I’ve been looking around our house, and really contemplating what I hope to tackle this year. So here are some of my goals for 2018, and what I hope to accomplish in our home.
#1. Is tackling the last room in our house that has not even seen a paintbrush since we’ve lived here. Seriously I’ve painted every room in our house – more than once, except for this space. Our master bathroom! Yikes. There is a whole lot of beige blah-ness going on in there. And even though the tub and toilet are somewhat new, it is in dire need of some serious character. I will be sharing more next week about the design plans, and what my vision is for the space, and I can’t wait to get started! I have yet to take some before photos for all of you, but in the meantime here is a look at the downstairs bathroom we renovated last year.
#2. Since we’ve been in our house, I’ve spent the last six and half years tweaking and perfecting the inside. The last few years we’ve begun focusing our efforts to our exterior, improving our curb appeal, and this year I foresee more outside projects than inside ones. One of them happens to be revamping our farmers porch.
We painted our porch when we first moved in, which you can see HERE [beware it’s an extremely OLD post]. Our porch is one huge slab of concrete, and even though the paint has held up nicely, it started to chip again last year, which means we’ve had to repaint our porch every other year.
It’s not bad, but I would love to cover it up with some beautiful decking, and then redo the steps with some reclaimed brick. EEK! I’ll share more on that design plan this spring, seeing how everything is covered in snow and ice right now.
#3. Since we are talking outdoors, I have some big landscaping plans for around our yard, and hopefully our driveway too! But there is another area in our outdoor spaces that I hope to expand. We created our outdoor fire pit two years ago, and we love it. As soon as the snow melts we start using that space.
Currently we have a table in front of our barn, but we want to rent an excavator and clear out the area to the left of the barn behind where I have the trellis dividers. Then I have big plans to bring in more crushed stone and string more outdoor lights down the whole side of the barn and create a wonderful outdoor eating area!
#4. Another item on the list is refreshing our daughters room just a bit. I can’t believe it’s already been two years since I did this mini-makeover in her space.
She still has the same bedding, but she has gotten a new bed, and since making over her brothers room this past fall, she’s wanting more of an update herself. Honestly her walls are in rough shape. So we are taking the opportunity to do a tiny refresh in her room while we patch up her walls. This time it will be just paint, and reusing most of her accessories, since she already got a new tufted upholstered bed.
#5. Lastly, but not least, I do have plans to refresh our living room. Before you say to yourself “why? no isn’t it fine the way it is?” It is. Trust me, it’s totally fine. But this past year brought on some big change in my life personally, which I never shared because well I was waiting for things to be finalized. No, I’m not pregnant! But we were negotiating on a potential new house. And as much as I told myself not to get my hopes up, I had already envisioned what it would look like with us living there. That brought about the need for wanting to change some things, since I had already been envisioning the change of what a new house would bring. While I still love our home, very much, I am feeling the need to change things up a bit, if for no one else but myself. And don’t worry it won’t be too drastic.
While the basics will be staying, I’m hoping to freshen things up with changing up some of the colors, and building a new coffee table. I could for sure leave my living room exactly like this, but my sister can attest to this – as a kid I was always re-arranging the furniture in our room. Seriously it’s just something I love to do. So we are going to chalk this up the nature of the beast, and sometimes I just need to shake things up a little to bring rest to my soul. So that’s what I’m doing. And of course I will bring you all along for the ride!
So that’s it. There is nothing super major, with the exception of our master bathroom renovation, but I’m really excited for what 2018 will hold, and hoping that my goals for 2018 will come to pass, along with perhaps a few others that I’ll be sure to share!
