Hi Friends! Thank you so much for all the kind remarks towards yesterdays Spring Vignette post! In case you missed it, you can see it HERE. I think you all were just as excited as I was about all the plants being faux! It really was super easy to make, and I think they can be a staple in your decor, not just for spring. So today I’m sharing with you how I made these DIY faux potted plants.
First, you will want to gather your materials. Any type of container will work, for this project I used a second hand white urn, and some aged terra cotta pots I picked up from Michaels.
- You’ll need a container of your choice.
- Some floral foam.
- Faux plants.
- Moss
- A knife (not pictured)
- And wire cutters *optional – I used these to trim the stems on my faux florals*.
- Faux Succulent Potted – first thing I did was trim the stem on my faux floral piece. This way it wouldn’t stick up too high above the pot. Next, with a knife, I cut my floral foam to fit inside my pot.
Once I had the foam in place, I pushed it into the pot, making sure it was just below the lip of the pot. This ensures that it won’t be seen from the side. Then I proceeded to insert my faux succulents until they were at the desired height, and I filled in around the edges with some moss.
2. Faux Fern Potted – I followed the same instructions when creating my second faux potted plant. I gathered my materials, and got started.
3. Faux Paper White display – I used a second hand white ironstone urn. I also used more than one stem, so I will show you how I went about arranging those.
Once I filled my urn with the floral foam, I could visualize how I wanted to arrange the faux stems. Keeping in mind that their bulb base was a little wide, I wanted to keep them closer to the rim of the urn vs. stacking them all in the center.
I drew an imaginary cross, and placed each paper white directly across from one another. Keeping in mind this doesn’t have to be perfect, because real flowers never look perfect, I just wanted them to have enough room at the base for their bulbs.
I finished it off by covering the floral foam with some moss, and now no one can tell if they are real or faux.

Hi Bre — Being a brown thumb type of plant grower, these faux plant ideas are perfect! Could you share where you purchased your plants? Particularly the paper whites…I can’t believe how realistic they are!
Thanks so much!
Love your style!

Here’s a funny story about my faux plants. I have a couple of these in my home along with some real plants. Last year when I went on vacation I had a friend come over and water my plants while I was gone. I didn’t mention the faux ones but they looked so real to her that she not only watered them but put them in my garden window to get some sunshine. We had a good laugh over that one! Love your blog, Bre.

Faux plants are great for those of us who don’t have the greenest of tbumbs! I have a couple of days plants that look real enough that people have asked me for a cutting from them, lol! Your’s are very pretty.

LOL, I get it I totally get it! It happens to me even after I proofread my blog, and then people love to comment and correct my errors, and I’m always dying because it was autocorrect 🙂 lol

Thanks so much for the tutorial! You did a great job with this vignette and as everyone else, they look so real!! I commented on yesterdays post just now, so you may not have seen it yet. They all look amazing, but the white flowers with the bulbs….I honestly didn’t think they were faux. Great job as always!!
