So I’m not sure if you caught my Instagram stories a few weeks ago, but I was on the hunt for a new exterior door color. Our house has white siding on it, but the doors are all wood original to the 1846 year our house was built. They are in decent condition, however extremely drafty in the winter, even with storm doors. We do have hopes to replace them with better more efficient doors, because I am all set watching my heat escape out of them in the winter, but in the meantime I gave them all a fresh coat of paint!
I was on the hunt for a darker color than what we had. I had painted them Peppercorn by Sherwin Williams the summer before, after previously painting them Tricorn Black. I like them dark, especially when they add contrast to the white siding, but after a year the Peppercorn color that I love in our downstairs bathroom and on our island was looking more gray than blue on our exterior doors. I shared my woes on finding the right navy blue, charcoal gray – ish color in my IG stories, and SO many of you chimed in with suggestions. Like, SOOOOO many of you! And I am so thankful, because I ended up finding a winner!
You may have noticed in my recent fall home tour that our front door was little darker? If not, let me show you what it looked like before …
And here is the after …
You can tell the most when you compare the paint color to the hardware on the door. I still need to replace that, but things get tricky when you start messing with the hardware on antique doors, which we have found out before.
I painted all three of our exterior doors, which you can see our porch door, and storm door below…
The trickiest part was finding a color that didn’t drastically change hues depending on which direction the door faced. Anything that was too blue, looked more blue than gray on our back door, and anything that was too gray, just didn’t show up as dark as I was wanting on our front door and porch door.
Now, I’ve never actually shared our back door with you before here on the blog, so I decided to take some pictures to show you, since luck would have it, this is actually the easiest door to photograph ๐
I ended up going with Wrought Iron by Benjamin Moore, and couldn’t be happier. It’s just the deep shade of navy blue / charcoal gray that I was hoping for. Believe it or not it actually looks darker in person, but for some reason photographed a bit lighter than it really appears.ย
Our back door is probably in the roughest shape. It has cracks along the panels, that just don’t seem to want to stay filled, regardless of how many times we try to patch them. It’s old and has character, and will do for now. But I like it so much better in this new color.ย
I love how it plays off of the granite step, and the crushed granite stone barrier we have around the entire house. It picks up the blues and the grays in the rocks, and makes all the colors tie in together.ย
Tomorrow I get up bright and early to head to Waco!! I’m so excited, I have a feeling I will sleep like a kid on the night before Christmas! In case you missed the news I’m headed to Waco, TX for Silhobration at Magnolia Market, and you can read all about it HERE. Be sure to follow along on Instagram with me for all the “in-the-moment” action! And of course I will be sharing more on the blog next week when I get back ๐

Great color! It’s not too blue, too black, too charcoal…it’s perfect! Hey girl! You’ve got a great looking back door, love the accent panel at the top of the door, I’ve never seen one quite like before. The ‘Wrought Iron’ shade gives your fabulous fall decorations and granite step extra pop.
Travel safely and have TOO much fun in Waco!
