Hello friends! I’m so glad that my lastest post on our dining room style has evolved was helpful for so many of you. In case you missed it you can catch up HERE, and see what our dining room looked like when we first moved in, to how it morphed into the space you see today! I was going to share my living room next, but decided I would share with you how our bedroom style has transitioned over the last 8 years. The transformation is crazy to say the least, so let’s get started!
When we first moved in, our bedroom was actually the first room I set up. I remembered all to well how nice it felt when we moved from our first apartment to our previous one. With how exhausting moving can be, it was so nice to have our bedroom mostly set up to be refreshed in. So that’s exactly what I did when we moved into our house too!
The walls had already been painted a coffee – tan color, and it worked with our current bedding, so here is how things looked when we first moved in.
It was cozy, because of the character our old farmhouse already had, but still felt like it was lacking something. So we DIY’d a board & batten treatment, and it was just the added character our bedroom was lacking.
When I was younger, one of my favorite things to do was to come home from school and re-arrange my bedroom. Much to my sisters demise who I shared the room with, some weeks I would re-arrange it multiple times, to the point where my mom had to make up the rule I could only re-arrange my half of the bedroom. That didn’t stop me from being creative with every possible furniture layout you could make happen in HALF of bedroom, lol!
Then I got the itch to re-arrange our room, but my only dilemma was the only other wall our headboard would fit on had an eaved ceiling. So I waited, and as luck would have it we ended up getting a king size bed not too long after, which meant we could no longer use our old headboard and bed frame, so I seized the opportunity and re-arranged our room.
We installed old barn boards along the bottom portion of the wall to act as a headboard, and our room stayed like this for quite awhile. Until that is, I came across the headboard of my dreams.
I loved how our room felt, but after not having a headboard for a few years, I was ready for it to feel a little bit more “grown-up”.
I loved the details of this headboard, it was upholstered but has a weathered french oak wood trim, giving it just the perfect touch of something vintage. You can actually find this headboard on Amazon – HERE. I squealed so loud when it arrived, I think I scared the delivery guy, lol! We have it resting between the wall and our boxspring and mattress, and it stays in place just fine.
It finally felt like we had a grown-up bedroom, between the added wall molding details, better bed linens, and a new headboard, this finally felt like “us”.
Then one day last spring I got the urge to paint our room dark. I was craving a moody color, so I took the opportunity of the hubby being out of town on business and painted our room.
He came home – surprised, but loved it! I convinced him to install THESE wall sconces on either side of our bed to complete the look I had envisioned.
When it comes to decorating I think the first thing to remember is that you are decorating for YOU, and no one else. Sure you can be inspired and get inspiration from other people, but the moment we start letting their opinions determine how we decorate our spaces, we begin to loose ourself.
I always want our bedroom to feel like an escape, a retreat if you will. So pick a paint color that will feel that way to you. Make sure your bedding staples are neutral so you have the flexibility to change them up when the mood strikes! And never underestimate the power of having a good beside lamp! A common mistake I see people make is choosing a lamp that is too small, I go bigger for a cozier feel at night when they are on.

This is lovely! I would not have thought of a darker color for the bedroom, but I am so drawn to the peacefulness of the photo, it totally works!

Great to see the transformation from then till now. Moody colours are gorgeous and after all it is only paint and can be changed quickly again when the itch comes back!
