Hello Friends! I’m so excited to be teaming up with some great blogging friends today as we share our refreshing summer beverages! Whether you are looking for crowd-pleasing cocktail or non-alcoholic beverage, I think you will find, there is something here for everyone!
I love mojitos! Like LOVE mojitos, but sometimes I don’t always feel like making them, and to be honest they aren’t the most enjoyable to make for a crowd either. Well a few years ago while we were on vacation, I ordered a mojito, but they didn’t have any mint. So the friendly local in his broken english told me I wanted a Caipirnha (Kipe-er-een-ya). And it was amazing! Just the refreshing summer cocktail I was craving!
I later found out that the Caipirnha is Brazil’s national cocktail, and it’s traditionally made with Cachaca, a liquor made from fresh sugarcane juice. While you can order it, I just settle for white rum. I’ve also seen some recipes call for dark rum as well, so for this instance let’s just say use your favorite rum!
Like the Mojito, the Caipirnha is prepared very similarly, with the muddling of the fresh limes and sugar, you just don’t add the mint. While these can be made individually, today I’m sharing how I make a big batch of them for easy summer entertaining.
Since having this delicious drink on vacation, we’ve tweaked the recipe a little bit, but don’t worry we didn’t stray too far from the original. You can always search “Caipirnha recipe” and pull it right up 🙂
Crowd Pleasing Caipirnha Recipe:
- 8-10 Limes
- 2 cups granulated sugar
- 750ml white rum
- 1 liter of seltzer
Using a gallon jug, or decanter, cut each lime in half and squeeze juice into container. Add sugar and stir. *I try to avoid from white sugar so I use Agave syrup, and love the taste just the same. I find that I just have to muddle it to mix well before adding the rum.* Let this sit for a 10-15 minutes to allow the sugar to retract the juices from the limes. Then add your rum. Serve over ice.
Now you could drink it just like this, but I like to top off each glass with a splash of seltzer. I keep a few bottles nearby, so when people are filling their cups they can add it on the spot, so it doesn’t loose their fix throughout the day.
It really is quite simple, and while you can make different variations of this recipe, the end result is a great refreshing summer beverage! Enjoy!
