Hello friends!! I hope your holiday week is going well! If you’re like me, you might be feeling like you are still in that holiday coma, wondering what day it is and have consumed entirely too much cheese over the last couple of days. Non-the-less today is Monday, and even though the kids are still on winter break, I’m finding myself wanting to clean and organize things around our house. So today I’m sharing how what I use for our Christmas decor storage, in case you are wanting to clean and organize too!
Come and see ~
Every year is different. Most years our Christmas decor stays up until after the New Year. Some years it’s even stayed up until well into January, and other years it comes down as early as the day after Christmas. I know for some they still celebrate Christmas through January 6th, when the wise men came and brought their gifts, but for me it only takes one piece of crispy garland for it to have a trickle effect and it all comes down. I think that would be partly because I start putting up our Christmas decor around Halloween, so by the end of December, I find myself craving a clean slate as I begin reflecting on the year we’ve had.
I start by collecting my Christmas decor from each room, and compiling it in one space. For me, my dining room table ends up being the perfect spot to organize my Christmas decor into categories.
I put all my mercury glass trees in one section, my tiny village houses in another, and keep all my bottle brush trees in a separate pile. This way when I pack everything away, it all stays together, and keeps it organized for when I take things out next year.
My favorite containers to use are these clear plastic bins, found on Amazon HERE, because I can easily see what’s inside of them. This is super helpful when I’m grabbing the bins the next year, because I don’t always remember where I put away certain things. Because we store everything in our basement, and still get water down there, everything has to go in plastic to avoid water damage. I also love that most plastic containers are stackable, keeping things neat and organized.
I also save the boxes my ornaments come in, so it’s easy to put everything away. Typically, I will reuse ornament boxes, until they have seen their fare share of wear ‘n tear. Once they loose their shape, into the trash they go, and I invest in something sturdier, like the plastic ornament storage containers.
Then I put all of my ornament boxes into one large rubbermaid container. That way when I go to decorate my tree, I only have to bring up the bin that has my ornaments in it, instead of rummaging through a bunch of different boxes to find my ornaments.
Once everything is packed up, I bring the bins down to the basement, where I have shelves to hold all my storage bins. I keep things organized on my shelves, separated by season, so it’s easy to find what I’m looking for when I’m ready to switch out our decor.

Great tips and ideas, thank you! Three years ago, my ever-organized husband, sorted through all of our different seasonal/holiday decor and organized and stored it in much the same way as you have shown here. I used to wait until the last possible minute to decorate for each season or holiday knowing I would have to search through boxes and bags of stored decorations to find the appropriate decor. No more. The sense of freedom his organization has brought to me is exhilarating! I am going to invest in some of your fabulous wreath boxes. Mine are currently stored in zippered vinyl bags intended for wreath storage, the boxes with lids are much more protective than my vinyl bags. Many thanks for a fabulous post!
