I know I’ve been sharing a lot lately about how much I love to purge and clean out our spaces during these winter months. Once the holidays are behind us, and all the Christmas decor is brought back down to the basement, I love to look at the rooms in our home with a fresh set of eyes. Naturally all the blank spaces left behind from holiday decorations being taken down has me wanting to refresh our space. So today I’m sharing 5 ways you can refresh your space, with little to no money being spent.
#1 Re-arrange your furniture
I’ll be honest, I haven’t done this as much as I’d like to in our home, simply because most of our rooms only allow one layout. But the times I have done it, our rooms feel like brand new spaces all over again!
Our bedroom flipped around. When I was repainting it this past Christmas I started to get the urge to flip it back again, but we will see ๐
#2 Try a New Paint color
Nothing refreshes a space more than a fresh coat of paint. I love to paint – it’s one of the ways I creatively feel refreshed, but it also lets me do something with my hands without needing a whole lot of skill. Stay in the lines – check. Paint the walls all the same color – check, and I don’t have to come up with an original design, or wonder what I’m going to paint – lol.
Here are a few rooms I have repainted to freshen things up in our home.
Staircase ~
When we first moved in, our front staircase hallway got the prettiest shade of colonial blue ( I don’t remember the exact color). But lack of natural light made our staircase feel so dark. So a few years later, I decided to paint it the same light gray/beige we used to have in our bedroom – Hazy Skies by Benjamin Moore (shown in second photo below).
Dining Room ~
Our dining room was the first room I painted when we bought this house. Wood smoke by Glidden, and it’s still one of my all time favorite grays. A fews after I painted it gray, we added the faux board and batten treatment (shown below), and then just over a year ago, after much debate, decided to try out a new darker color, and I love how cozy it makes our dining room feel now.
Master Bedroom ~
For the longest time our room was painted Hazy Skies by Benjamin Moore, with our faux board and batten treatment painted white (shown above.) I got the itch to paint our bedroom a darker color, and went all in, painting the trim and doors the same as the wall color. Reveal shown HERE.
Then just before the holidays this year, I got the urge once I again to lighten up our bedroom a bit, but not too much. I painted it Mindful Gray by Sherwin Williams, shown below.
Even in our Kids Bedrooms ~
#3 Swap out your Furniture
Similar to rearranging your furniture, swapping up your furniture from one room to the next, instantly refreshes your space. I did this last year in our kitchen, and for months our kitchen felt like a brand new space. I still love the outcome, and have also done this with the furniture at the bottom of our staircase as well. It’s fun to think of new ways your same furniture can serve you by being used in a different room, and I love that you can change things up without buying something new!
Kitchen
For the longest time we had this DIY bench my hubby built, with crates underneath it for our shoes. Occasionally I would swap it up with another bench I had just to give it a different look. Like what you see below ~
Once we no longer had a need to have a bench in our kitchen, I swapped it out last year for this antique dresser that holds all our kids winter gear, making it much more accessible and easier for them to find their stuff.
Hallway
Our front staircase hallway has definitely gotten the most furniture swapping than any other place in our house. You can see a handful of different looks it’s had below ~
*TIP – you can also try painting a piece of furniture to give it new life*

#4 Change out your artwork
I love to do this seasonally already, but sometimes it’s nice to move your artwork around, or change it up for a fresh look in your room. It’s funny how the things we hang on our walls can really affect how a room feels, and changing up your artwork is a great way to reflect what you are currently loving.
#5 Create a New Vignette
Anytime I want to make a change in one of my rooms without it involving a big effort, I create a new vignette. Just simply re-arranging knick knacks I already have, or picking up a few new ones (inexpensively), adds a fresh take to my spaces without needing a lot of time or energy. It also gets my creative juices going to see items I own in a new light. It’s fun to come up with creative new ways to display things I have, and sometimes leaves me wondering why I didn’t that sooner.
I hope this helps you love the space you are living in just a little bit more, and inspires some fresh ideas for your home.

I am new to your blog. I am loving your ideas! So nice to see pics of areas you speak of. Thanks for helping me love the spaces I live in!!
I take it your husband doesn’t mind you changing things around? Mine gets grumpy sometimes when “his things” get moved. ๐
Bre says
Thank you so much Mimi. I would say he’s somewhat used to it. He also recognizes that it’s part of my creative gift, so he has more grace for me to change things up. The only time he chimes in is if I add something he’s not a fan of ๐

Where did you find your blinds? I was told they don’t make them any more. I’m looking for just that kind. LOVE your blog and posts. Thank you for taking the time to do it!
Bre says
Hi Cathy!! I originally got mine from Lowes, and you are right they don’t make them anymore, but I’ve found almost identical wooden blinds on Overstock here – https://rstyle.me/+T39jKB0nwJ_lSc6UJ6fqNA

Where is the blue and white flowers in vase picture above the antique dresser from?
Bre says
Hi Val! I got the artwork from Copper Corners. You can find it here – https://www.coppercornersart.com/dont-forget
