Hello Friends! I’m going to be honest, in the past I would have been totally skeptic just by the title of todays blog post. I used to think of myself as somewhat of a coinessuar when it came to Margaritas, and I had tried my fair share of “skinny” margaritas in the past, but they just never seemed to taste like a true margarita. Margaritas were my favorite drink to order when we would go out, and my absolute favorite summertime drink. Up until a couple years ago when I started cutting back on my sugar intake, and cleaning up my diet even more, I loved margaritas!! Unfortunately, the sour mix used to make margaritas didn’t make the cut, so I just left out having margaritas all together – until now! Today I’m sharing one of the best skinny margaritas I’ve ever had, and trust me when I say I’ve tried quite a few!
Come and see ~
There’s nothing I love more when gathering with friends in the evening that having a good margarita that’s accompanied by it’s favorite sidekick – Chips & Salsa (and Guac too!). Earlier this year we had gotten together with some friends, and she made margaritas. My friend was fully aware of my diet choices and assured me there was no sour mix in the drink, and read off all the ingredients she used.
I braced myself before I took a sip, because well – like I said, most “skinny” margaritas just don’t taste the same, and I’ve never been a fan of the skinny sour mixes you can get either. They might be lower in calories, but when you love margaritas as much as I do, you’d rather just go without.
I was shocked! I took another sip. This was really good! My friend smiled at me because she knew we had found a winner when it comes to low-cal margarita option.
So you want to know what’s in it?! Here are the ingredients to this sour-mix FREE, skinny margarita –
- Tequila
- Triple Sec
- Fresh Lime Juice
- Orange Seltzer
First start with a good tequila, that will make a big impact on the taste of your margarita. You don’t have to top-shelf (although that’s nice too), but I find 1800 silver is a good quality without breaking the bank. Where I would spend more money is on my triple sec. There are plenty of inexpensive options, but this is an area where you want to invest in. Grand Marnier and Cointreau are both really great options, but more expensive than all the other triple sec options – but trust me when I tell you – they are WORTH IT!
Fresh lime juice is a must for this skinny margarita. Unlike a jamaican margarita which is just that – tequila and lime juice, you also add seltzer which I’ll share in a minute. But fresh lime juice is a must, because it adds such a refreshing flavor to this drink!
The secret ingredient is the orange seltzer. Even if you aren’t a fan of seltzer on it’s own, I’m pretty confident you will like it in this drink. The orange seltzer compliments the flavor of the triple sec, while also keeping things light and a little bubbly, which is perfect in the summer time heat.
After you top it off with seltzer, mix it with a spoon and garnish with a fresh lime wedge!
What makes this margarita “skinny” is not using sour mix, or simple syrup. I find that with the fresh lime juice, and the flavored seltzer you don’t even miss the sour mix. However, you could also add a splash of orange juice to this, or a little agave syrup or honey if you prefer things sweeter. But I encourage you to try it first without 🙂
Directions :
- Combine 1 1/2 ounces of tequila and 1 ounce of triple sec with 2-3 Tbs. of freshly squeezed lime juice over ice.
- Top with orange seltzer, **optional** and splash of orange juice or 2 ts. of agave syrup, if desired.
- Stir gently, and enjoy over ice.

These sound so tasty and like that they don’t have as much sugar as the kinds with margarita mix.

Genius. I am in total agreement. Hate the aftertaste of the skinny drinks, so like you, I just do without. Can’t wait to try it.
