Hello Friends!! Today I am sharing our daughters most recent bedroom makeover. I honestly can’t even believe I’m using the word “tween” to describe her bedroom, because after all she is still my baby girl. And while she will always be my baby, my now 10 year old daughter had been longing for a room that felt more like her, and a little less pink. She had been asking for her room to be painted blue for over a year, but patiently waited while we finished up other projects around the house. The time finally came for us to tackle her room, and she was more than happy to help me with the painting!
I shared her first room makeover HERE, in April of 2016!
Then a couple years after that, we gave her room another makeover. We got her a new daybed, installed board and batten, and painted her room Ella Rose from Magnolia paint, the most beautiful shade of muted pink. I hand painted the buffalo check pattern on the top portion of her wall, which came back to haunt me as I had to sand down all the paint lines to prep for her new paint color – lesson learned on that one, but I still loved how it came out.
Sadly it never made it to the blog, lol. We are just going to chalk that one up to life getting in the way. Thankfully I was able to get some pictures of her room for my upcoming book, The Gift of Home. Her room took on a lot more pink in the previous makeover, so you can imagine her excitement when I told her we could finally paint her room blue.
We painted her room Stardew by Sherwin Williams, which was the perfect soft shade of room for this girl who loves the beach!
My girl loves the beach! She always has. And blue is her favorite color, so thankfully it was easy to combine her two favorites into her new room makeover.
When my daughter first started talking about wanting her room to be blue and with a beachy theme, chambray was the first thing that came to my mind. It’s soft, full of texture, and has the perfect beachy feel! These pale blue chambray throw pillow covers from With Lavender Grace, were the jumping off of point for the decor in her room! We had the paint color, and now some decor accents, we were ready to fill in the rest of the space.
I found her a new desk on Facebook Marketplace. She loves having a big workspace in her room, where she can craft, and draw, and color, and this one has plenty of drawers for much needed storage. The only problem was it was cherry! Yep, a dark, red colored desk. Thankfully, it was solid wood, so I knew with a little help from my sander, I could transform it to work beautifully in her room. And beautifully it fit!
There’s one thing I’ve learned about furniture makeovers. The overall size should be what you are looking for, and if you want to sand them or strip them down, they should always be real wood. I loved the size of this desk, and the shape of the legs. We were looking for a desk that had drawers, and I wanted something that had character, and didn’t fully feel like a piece of office furniture in her room.
I sanded the entire desk, and then gave it 2 coats of Minwax Driftwood. Once the stain was dry, I used Miss Mustards Seed White Wax over the entire piece, to help lighten it just a bit more. Then I ordered some new knobs off of Amazon, to complete the makeover.
For artwork, I headed to Etsy to look for prints of the beach. There are so many to choose from, and so many different styles and colors. I wanted her room to feel a little sophisticated, since she wanted it to feel less “little girl”, so I settled on a few beachy prints in black and white. I’ll include the sources at the bottom of the post.
Once her paint color was on the wall, I knew I had the perfect artwork to compliment it! I had received this abstract canvas from Lindsay Letters a few years ago when I was decorating for the holidays, but I loved the colors in it so much, I knew they would match perfectly.
I placed the larger abstract framed canvas on the back of her dresser, and leaned another Lindsay Letters canvas in front. I love the layered look of the 2 canvases’ together, but I also love that the larger pieces of artwork have clean lines, and make her room feel bigger and tidier at the same time.
I had some solid white curtain panels from IKEA that were purchased about 15 years ago, and have been used in multiple rooms around our home. I hung them with a coordinating white bamboo blind, that keeps things looking crisp, but also adds layers to her room, and some texture!
Her ceiling light fixture, was another area where I could add in some of that beach texture!
