Hello Friends!!
Happy 1st day of Fall!! Even though I have been sipping on some pumpkin spice coffee for a few weeks now, I still can’t wait for all the cozy comforts fall brings. I made my first official fall meal this past Sunday – chicken pot pie, and even though our temps haven’t quite reached cool enough for sweaters and boots, I’m enjoying the subtle change of seasons none-the-less. Instead of rushing to decorate and then stay in that hurried state of “I can’t wait for the next season”, I’m taking it slow. Embracing all that fall has to offer. Even though I can’t wait for the beautiful display of autumn leaves outside my window, I’m enjoying seeing the slow change as a few trees have sparks of dark red, and bright orange, while the rest are still very much green 🙂 Over the weekend we were outside in our backyard and my daughter couldn’t help but share how much she loves walking on the crunchy leaves again. So while fall begins to slowly enter the scene in our backyard, I thought I would share with you my Simple Fall Porch this year.
Come and see ~
I feel like the sky is the limit when it comes to options in how grand or how minimal I can decorate our new porch seasonally. This year I was craving something simple. Maybe it’s because the planters I made for the summer practically double in size by the end of the season, and my pots looked like they were overflowing, but I was craving something that felt neat and tidy, and not so over-flowy :p
I bought doubles of everything, so that I could create a symmetrical look flanking either side of the door. I knew for sure I wanted to incorporate ornamental grasses in my taller concrete planters (found at Home Depot last year). Because of their height, I put the grasses in place first to act as my pillar planter, meaning everything else would get arranged around these grasses which were placed on both sides of our front door.
Then I placed my next largest size planter, filled with kale on either
Once I had everything in place on the right side of our front door, I began setting things in place on the left side of the door. Since I had bought doubles of everything it made it easy to set up this display. I started with my largest planter first, the tall grass, and then began placing my kale and pumpkins around it.
Even though I was duplicating the other side, I didn’t worry about exact placement of the smaller items. You may notice when you look at both sides they aren’t exactly the same layout, but I did that on purpose just so things don’t feel “too perfect” for me. You can say it’s my relaxed approach to decorating, but as look as I have the same amount of larger items, the little ones just get tucked in around them.
This fall feels a little extra special to us this year, as it is our FIRST fall in our new home. When we moved in this past May, Spring was still showing off, and it’s been fun to experience each new season. Summer gave us a lay of the land as we got to see each different kind of plant and flower bloom, and I’m excited for fall to see what colors will grace our beautiful view. I hope you feel inspired to grab a pumpkin or two for your front steps, even if the temps aren’t quite feeling like fall just yet. I know it will be here before we know it!
