Hello Friends! I’m so excited to share with you our landscaping plans designed by Yardzen for our new home! When we moved into our new home, we both had day dreamed about what we couldn’t wait to do with the outside landscape of this property. However there were some areas where we couldn’t quite figure out how to tackle, or how to connect with the other design elements we had planned for our yard. Insert Yardzen to the rescue! They came up with an entire exterior landscape design plan, and I can’t wait for you to see!
Come and take a look ~
In case you missed it, I shared my ideas for the exterior of our house HERE. We have plans to paint the house white, reface the chimney with stone, and paint the barn! Along with those plans though I want to update some of the landscaping around the house as well. It was so fun to see Yardzen put some of those plans into action in their design plan, along with helping me pick out new plants to go around the house.

Yardzen Exterior Design Mock Up –
We have an original rock wall that runs along the entire front of our yard. It really gives the quintessential New England feel to this historic colonial, and I can’t wait to clean it up, and plant an entire row of limelight hydrangeas along it.
One of the areas I wasn’t quite sure what to do with was this right side of our driveway that is up against the house. It gets a small amount of afternoon sunlight, and we can’t have anything too big protruding into the driveway that would cut into parking space. But as is this section just felt too bare.
I love the look of this clean hedge that they suggested below~
Another trouble spot is on the left side of our driveway. There is a huge sugar maple tree in front of the barn that keeps the entire area covered in shade, making it very difficult for any grass to grow.
On top of the shade, in front of the barn on the left side are these large stones, with the largest one to the left (shown in the photo below) marking an old well. Since removing the larger stones isn’t really an option, I asked them what we could do to make this area look more appealing. And boy did they answer ~

Yardzen Design Mock Up ~
Yardzen proposed to create this gravel garden bed running along the left side of our driveway, using different bushes to add color and texture. The crushed stone helps cover and blend in the larger stones already in the ground, while also placing a few larger stones purposefully on top of the crushed stone to help blend in the landscape.
You will also see in the Yardzen mock up photo above, on the side of the house just past the farmers porch, is a walkway between the barn and the house. This area is almost all shade thanks to some very large sugar maple trees, but I still wanted the area to be aesthetically pleasing. Especially since this is at the top of our driveway and is also a way to get to our backyard.
I had no idea what to do with this space, and Yardzen came to the rescue with these beautiful shade gardens, and pathway that wraps all the way around the back of our house.
Leading you right up to the area we want to convert into our outdoor fire pit area.
Current Backyard Patio ~
I knew right off the back of the house that I wanted to convert this overgrown and uneven garden bed area into a gravel patio complete with gas fire pit. My dilemma was figuring out how to do so and still having some plants so that it didn’t feel too bare.
This area has always felt overgrown and unkept to me. Now I have a clear vision for this space – its’ cleaned up, and still has all the charm we were hoping for.
While we were hoping to get started on this area this year, our plan is to start demoing it this fall, so that once spring hits, we have a clean slate to install in. I know it will take a little while before it will look pretty again, but I am so thankful for Yardzens design eye, it gave me just the inspiration I needed to tackle these areas around our new home, and I can’t wait to bring this vision to life!

This plan is simply stunning. I love the minimalist
look. What kind of pathway leads to your front door?

I love the plans! I live in a rural area and have issues with shady spots where nothing will grow, but will not give up my trees to have a better planting area so this has given me a few good ideas for my own garden. I get so excited for you as you share each vision you have for your home.

I love the plans and canβ wait to see them take shape!!

What a wonderful transformation it will be when you’re done!
The only part you may want to reconsider is the 2nd entrance on the right. It looks like a small, oddly placed shed attached to the front of your home or an afterthought. I’d pump it up and also put side windows in it etc. Sorry.

Hi Karen! Thank you so much. I’m not sure which small entrance you are referring to?? But I think maybe perhaps you are referring to our basement walkout. That is on the back side of our house. π

the landscaping ideas are WONDERFUL….. no wonder you are thrilled!!!! just one question: the shrubs/flowers suggested for the front of the house…. are some going to be colorful??? i really like the simplicity of the house front….. just wondering about some color being added!!??
Bre says
Thank you so much Lynne!! I can’t wait to get started. There will be some color in the bushes on the front of the house, but I like things pretty minimal to begin with. We are also playing around with the idea of adding shutters to the house since the windows feel a bit tiny in scale, so that would also be an area we can bring in some color π

The plans for your new landscaping look amazing. I love your house but the new paint colors and landscaping will knock it out of the park . You must be so excited about this. I canβt wait to see everything afterwards. I know things take a long time to get done but this will be stunning and so worth the wait.
Bre says
Ohh Thank you so much!! We are so so excited about this, and of course I want to get started right away lol, bringing this vision to life. I know it will take some time, but I’m hopeful that each year we will make some big strides π

Love their vision. It is going to look awesome. You have some of the same issues we have with shade. I see lots of pretty purple flowers. Can you tell me what they are? Thanks, Marcie
Bre says
Hi Marcie!! Yes I can, their official name is – *Astilbe x arendsii ‘Deutschland’, and they come in different colors, and tolerate full shade of part sun areas π
