Hello Friends!
It is hard to believe that we have officially made it into November, but here we are with Halloween behind us, and full steam ahead into the holiday season. I can’t wait to celebrate the holidays in our new home this year, and one of the features of our new house that we had been praying for was to have a designated guest room. You may remember in our last house, my office / laundry room would get transformed into a guest room, but that only worked if we were hosting one guest. If we had more than one guest coming to stay with us, then one of our kids (usually our daughter) would kindly give up her room for our guests to use her bedroom to stay with us. I love that it taught our kids how to serve our guests well, but I will be honest, I had definitely grown tired of all that room rearranging and shuffling to prepare for guests. We used to keep a spare twin size bed in our basement, and every time company came, I would pray as I lugged it up and down our basement stairs for our future house to have a guest room that was always ready. So you can imagine how thrilled I am that our new home not only has one guest room, but TWO! Today I’m sharing my guest room mood board for our first floor guest room. This room is located just off the living room, and I can’t wait to share my design inspiration with all of you!
Come and Take a Look ~
Above, the before view of our Living Room, looking into the guest room.
Our first floor guest room is a great size, and could also be considered an in-law suite, as it has a full bathroom attached to it as well. Trust me, I kept pinching myself that not only was I going to have a guest room, but that it was also going to have it’s own attached private bathroom as well. The bathroom is the only one in the house that hasn’t had a recent upgrade, as the tile feels quite dated to when it was installed in the 90’s. We do have plans to tackle this full bathroom renovation, but not for a little while.
Guest Room Before
You may have heard me mention it before, but the design style I want for this house is slightly different than the farmhouse style I was known for in our previous home. While there is nothing wrong with the design style I went for in our previous home, I’m a huge advocate of listening to your home and choosing a design style that feels cohesive to the bones of your home. Our new home was built in 1775, and carries a lot of that timeless colonial feel to it, from an era when homes were built with wainscoting paneled walls, and other architectural moldings and details. A time when it was more popular to paint the trim and wall paneling a color and leave the horse-hair plastered walls white.
Examples~
I love the look in antique homes when the walls and trim, and sometimes even staircase, are all painted the same color. It tricks the eye into making the space feel larger since there is no real stopping point of the paint color. I’m going to say this right now, there is no wrong or right way when it comes to painting trim the same color as your walls. It is solely up to the style and look you are going for. For our first floor guest room I knew I wanted this room to feel cozy, and it was a fun opportunity to use a dark color.

Since the walls will be dark I wanted to bring in pops of antique brass, and a mix of patterns so the room didn’t feel too flat or cold. Eventually we will move our existing headboard down into the guest room when we make a new bed for our room, but for now to help anchor the bed in the meantime I plan to hang this beautiful Landscape Art from Rooted & Grounded, found HERE, above the bed, and then I will layer the bed with throw pillows to help the bed feel more like a focal point.
Since the wall space around the bed is tight, I thought it would be fun to incorporate these wall sconces, to again tie in some of the brass accent details in the space, and also add some texture with the woven shades.
I plan to paint all the walls, trim, and doors Peppercorn by Sherwin Williams, keep the bedding light with a few throw pillows for some added color. Re-use my old dining room curtains that I made from Pottery Barn fabric by the yard more than fifteen years ago. Add in texture with baskets, sconces, and a new woven roman shade for the window, and wallpaper the closet. Since the walls in the closet are in rough shape, I would have to paint them anyways, and this will be a fun spot where I can add a little more pattern that will help re-emphasize the look I am going after in the space.

So very pretty, but donβt you ever get tired?!!! I wish I had your energy β¦ but Iβm a lot older than you, too!!!π€£π€£. Love your vision and the way you inspire all of us! π
Bre says
Oh trust me Kathy I do. There are a few routines that I have in place that help keep me from burn out. AND if I am tired I typically won’t share on social media lol. For some reason that seems to drain me more than sharing on here, and takes more energy. So if I’m feeling tired I just take a break over there until I’m ready to share again π

Aww thank you so much Deedra!!! I know I use a lot of white, but I also love the complete opposite too π Give me all the dark, moody walls π
