Hello Friends!
Last week I decided to start tackling another room in our house. This time our primary bathroom. While we might not be tackling everything on my to-do list, I am ready to make some simple updates in our primary bathroom. So today I’m sharing some of my design plans, along with my thought process on how I decide on what to tackle first. Even if you don’t have a primary bathroom remodel in the near future I hope some of these ideas will give you fresh inspiration for your home as well.
Come and see ~
You can see our bathroom in our New Home Tour Part 2, HERE, which I shared shortly after we had just moved in. At first glance – it’s GREAT! Our bathroom is a good sized room that includes a walk in shower, and soaking tub. However our personal favorite feature is the double vanity, because this is the first time in our married life we have ever had two sinks!
The bones in our primary bathroom are great, including the slate looking floor tile, found HERE. However, right away I started envisioning what this space would look like with some architectural details added to the walls. I knew if we added wall mouldings I would want to paint the room white, so I started testing out different white paints on the walls. This ended up turning into paint swatches being on the walls for quite a few weeks, and when I realized this project wasn’t a priority to tackle right away, I tried to cover my white paint swatches up. Only to realize out of all the leftover paint we had in the basement – none of them were the actual color in our bathroom.
It’s funny how paint swatches on the wall don’t seem to ever cause any harm. At first they are noticeable, but after awhile they start to fade away into background noise. Until all of a sudden that background noise has been there too long, and you realize it really is starting to bug you.
Another area I know I want to add in some more character to, is around the vanity. The frameless mirrors feel a bit more “builder basic”, and I would love to replace them with something that has either a chunky wood frame or an antique feel. There is also already wiring behind the walls for vanity lights – which I had been waiting to pull the trigger on, but thinking now I might just pull the trigger on adding the lights, and wait to replace the mirrors for when we do the wall mouldings – since the walls will most likely be damaged when we take those mirrors down.
And while I love having double sinks, the wood tone of the vanity is very warm, and feels very orange to me. The vanity itself is in great shape, but the color of the wood is just too warm for me. I had very high hopes of sanding the vanity down and refinishing it in a wood tone that was more my style, but unfortunately the material itself is not something that can be sanded down and refinished. So my next option is to paint it.
Taking my own advice from my recent post, Finding Contentment with our Homes, I realized that while we might not be able to tackle all the cosmetic changes I wish to make at this time, there is one thing I can do and that will drastically improve me mood whenever I’m in this space.

I went back to my original inspiration photo (shown above), and remembered how much I love just simple white walls. So I grabbed a can of white paint, and started painting our bathroom.
With the walls finally painted, this also means I can finally hang some of the artwork I’ve had for this space, and been holding off on doing. All these tiny details that will add a big impact to the space, and help me to be more content with it until we can tackle some of the bigger details that I would like to do.
And while we might not be able to add the wall mouldings yet that I would like, or swap out the mirrors (because of the damage it will do the walls), we can add some sconce lights to the vanity, and I can work on painting the vanity.

All of the current fixtures in our primary bathroom are matte black. And while I don’t mind the black, it feels a bit more modern for the design plan that I am envisioning. I don’t plan on swapping out all of the fixtures (just yet!), but I do plan on swapping out the vanity hardware, and mixing metals to help soften the more modern feel the space currently has.

I loved the sconces from our last bathroom makeover, and want to add a similar style in our primary bathroom as well.
I love pulling together all of the fixtures and details I want to incorporate in a mood board because it helps me stay on track, and see the design start to take shape. While everything in my mood board might not be used, it gives me a clearer vision of the things I really love.
Since I can’t get the rich wood tone I want in the vanity, I want to bring in some accessories that will add the warmth of wood into the space. Incorporating warm wood tones is always a key factor for me, for any room I’m working on. I’m also toying with the idea of either bringing in some antique brass tones, or antique pewter. I know I love the look of tarnished metals – it’s just something I always gravitate towards, and mixing metals will help tone down the modern look of the black fixtures that will be staying in the space.
Primary Bathroom Mood Board Design ~
I think sometimes with home projects we get stuck in the mindset that if we can’t do everything we want to do than why bother starting at all. But I’ve learned from experience that sometimes the smallest changes and tweaks can reap the biggest reward while we wait patiently to do the rest.
