Hello Friend!
The kids are back to school, and even though our temperatures aren’t reflecting it, as we make our way into the middle of September, I know fall weather will be here soon! We have have had a bit of a heat wave here in the northeast these last two weeks (I think summer wanted one last hoorah!), which makes it hard to get in the mood to decorate for fall. But nonetheless, my wheels have been turning on what I want to create for our fall planters this year. So I thought it would be fun to share some fall planter ideas with you, as I brainstorm what I might want to do this year, and help us get in the mood.
Let’s get ready for fall ~
Do you give your planters a refresh for fall? I know it’s easy to swap out the wreath on your front door for fall, but I also like to give our planters a little refresh as well.
I didn’t always used to do this. In my younger years I would buy some mums, place a pumpkin next to it, and call it a day. And let me just clarify there is absolutely nothing wrong with doing that. However one fall, my mums completely died within the first week of me bringing them home. No amount of water was going to revive these babies. Looking back, I think they must have already been on their way out when I bought them, and by the time I went back to the store to replace them, there was nothing left. I remember feeling so disappointed, so I started looking for other fall foliage and plants I could use, and that’s when the fascination started.
I could refresh my planters for fall with other plants.
I realized that there were so many other options out there to use in my planters for fall, once I stopped looking solely for mums. So the next year I challenged myself to refrain from buying any mums and set out on a mission to still see if I could get that fall feel for my porch. And you know what? I did!
Some of my favorites include :
- Grasses
- Cabbage or Kale – or BOTH!
- Corral Bells
- Dusty Miller
- “Autumn Joy” Sedum (Stonecrop)
One of the added bonuses, was most of the plants I was gravitating towards for my fall planters, could later be transplanted into the ground to add to our overall landscape as well. I love being able to add multipurpose to the plants I buy. It helps me feel like I’m not wasting all of my money on a temporary seasonal decor item.
Last year I did purchase a few smaller mums and used them on our front porch. I felt like I had brought back a familiar friend, but I was so happy I had pushed myself over the past couple of years to stretch my green thumb, and discover new plants that have now become go-to favorites I use year after year.
I hope this inspires you, and gives you ideas for creating your fall planters. If you liked this post, then you might also like my Gardening Tip post all about fall plants, and I share sources for a lot of the planters you see in todays post.
