Hi Friends!
At the start of the year I take some time to sit down and write out some goals that I have for the new year. This list includes personal goals that I have for myself, whether it’s incorporating something new into my routine, or an area in my life I want to work in like – be less distracted by social media and embrace more of what feels meaningful in my life. Learning a new skill like – make sourdough bread (I’ve been working on this one!), and of course projects for our house. Rather than making different lists for each category or area in my life, this ends up turning into more of a brain dump kind of session, but one that feels completely satisfying because it gets all of the goals out of my head and onto paper. I’ve already shared our recap from 2023, which you can read HERE if you missed it. Today I’m sharing my goals for 2024.
Here we Go ~
The first goal, is actually one that was on last years list, and I started it but need to finish it! So Goal #1 is going to be Finish the Kids Hallway.
This goal included painting the walls white. Applying some sort of limewash treatment to the bricks. Hang up family photos. Paint all the doors in the hallway, and add wood beams to the ceiling. We are mostly there, but my hopes in sharing this on my goal list is that it will kick my butt into gear and give me the motivation I need to finish off this space.
This will also lead into painting the rest of our upstairs hallway as well. Eventually I want to add some type of moldings to the wall, but for now giving it a refresh with new paint, and I’ve been on the hunt for a larger bookcase or hutch to place near the window, since the one currently there feels too small in scale for the space.
Pantry Makeover
Also from my list last year that I didn’t get to. I’m sure you can imagine how daunting of a task it will be to paint the insides of all the shelves which is mostly why I just didn’t get around to it last year. I would also like to replace the pantry door with an antique wood door, but just haven’t seem to have found just the right one, so I am still on the hunt for that.
Half Bath Makeover
We have a tiny half bath right off of our mudroom when you first walk into our home, and I’ve been dying to give the space the character it needs. The goal is to add cottage details with some wainscotting. Build a new vanity that feels more english style, less rustic. Along with a few other details to give the space more charm. I will be sharing all the plans in a blog post soon.
Add Wall Treatment to the Dining Room
{Below – our dining room just after we moved in}
We have been slowly adding character into our dining room, over the past three years that we’ve living here. I will be the first to say that I have enjoyed taking our time into making this house feel like our home. Our dining room has a lot of wall space, and while I love the overall size, I want to add some warmth in the form of a wall treatment. I want to recreate what I feel like would be historically accurate, and run horizontal boards along the bottom portion of our walls, just below the windows. It’s a treatment I’ve seen in other historic homes that were built around the same time ours was, and I think it will add just the character our dining room is missing.
Build Raised Garden Beds
I shared last year on the progress we made in our raised blueberry bush garden area. We have been working on a lot of the landscape around our home, and I’ve been dreaming up plans to expand our garden area with more raised beds to the section just next to our blueberry bushes.
You can see it in the photo above just to the right. It was previously used as a vegetable garden area, but is now mostly overgrown weeds. We did use a tiny portion of it last year to plant 26 tomato plants, but I would like to build raised beds, and use the same type of pea gravel stone in between to create walkways around the beds. The goal will be to use it for growing vegetables and cut flowers, with a large table in the center for prep work, and maybe even a few meals el fresco! I can’t wait to see this area of our garden come to life.
Trust me I have have more goals on my list, but these are the main goals for this year. Did you know that you are 20% more likely to complete a task that you write down?! That goes for goals too!
If you haven’t had a chance yet I would encourage you to take some time and think about some goals that you have for this year. Write them down. It’s ok if you don’t get to them all, but it will feel so good to work towards some of the goals you have as well!

You have planned well. I know “the kids” will have many plans and changes for their hallway . One big bulletin board that they can change daily would probable work well in your plan. Keep us updated.

I applaud your ambition. I have a journal that I write down everything I want to get done from week to week. I never seem to have enough time to get it done so it goes on the next weeks list. It makes me feel so depressed , for instance my sister-in-law gave me an old antique sled that belonged to my husband, (he is 72) that I wanted to decorated for the holidays. It is still on my front porch not decorated. I also decorated my bannister with small wreaths. The ones I have done look so nice but I cant seem to get to the 6th one. So this week our grandson is off from school for February break. We plan to spend time with him and I really need to hit the hamper and get all the laundry done. So in a nutshell I dont think a long time goal list will be for me, they make me sad when I dont accomplish whats on it. By the way I love your house, keep up the great work.

Thanks Kim!! I know that feeling all to well when it comes to not being able to get to everything I hoped to on my list. In busier seasons, I had to set more realistic goals for myself, because I felt the same way, and would be so discouraged at not getting everything done. I started writing shorter lists, giving myself grace, and letting go of all the extra to-dos. Then I would write down 3 things to accomplish for the week. Sometimes it wouldn’t happen, but most of the time it did, and having a more attainable list left me feeling more encouraged. We are all in different seasons and have different capacities to do things. There is way to much pressure out there to do more or to always be busy. Enjoy the time with your grandson! You will never regret it 🙂

In the upstairs hall you need something to balance the off center window…either move the existing chest there and put a picture/mirror over it or, when you get a bigger piece for the larger wall put a chair next to the window…just a thought

Yes I agree!! I haven’t really done any decorating in our upstairs hallway yet, so I’m excited to have it feel more finished 🙂
