The hutch in our dining room is one of my favorite spots to decorate seasonally. It’s the first spot I go to decorate for Christmas and an easy way to add seasonal decor that’s reflected throughout the entire room. Our hutch makes the perfect focal point, centered at the end of our table. Today I’m sharing the step-by-step process of how I style our hutch for fall.
Come and see ~
Our hutch was in need of cleaning, so before I did any decorating, I removed everything off of it and wiped down every surface. This gave me the perfect clean slate to start with, literally, lol.
You might be asking yourself “where to start” when it comes to decorating a hutch or open shelving (see more on decorating Open Shelves – HERE)? I like to begin with my outer corners. The top left and right side corners, and the bottom left and right side corners. I use my tallest or larger items in those spaces. This creates an “X” visually throughout my entire hutch.
Then, I grab my medium-sized pieces and place them in between the spots where the larger pieces are. These typically consist of batter bowls, mixing bowls, or smaller white pitchers. For fall, I like to incorporate pieces that particularly remind me of Thanksgiving. Antique silver platters, a turkey figurine I inherited from my mom, and usually a gravy boat or two.
Then it’s time to fill in any empty spots I have left. In this phase, I’m focusing on creating layers visually with the smaller pieces that I’m adding to my hutch. Tiny creamers and wooden spoons. Cloth napkins draped over bowls, and stacks of plates all add visual layers.
Now that all my serving pieces are in place and I’ve added a few of my favorite fall serving pieces, it’s time to add some fall stems. Just like in every other season, when I’m changing up the decor on our hutch, I like to incorporate greenery that reflects the current season. For fall, it’s all about maple-colored leaves, dried wheat, and, of course, a few pumpkins.
These seasonal touches are what really bring my fall hutch to life. With loads of texture, it brings the perfect seasonal statement to our dining room.

A soup tureen is repurposed as a vessel to hold a beautiful display of faux fall foliage, adding texture and natural elements to the overall display.

I am always inspired by your blogs! It makes me want to tweak a thing or two here and there every time I watch you work your magic. When we moved into our home 2 years ago, I was inspired by your hutch. We found a smaller on on Maketplace and I have enjoyed it ever since. One question…do you have any sources for a white ceramic turkey? I have looked for one for several years with no luck. Thanks and happy fall!!! Marcie

Thank you so much Marcie! I love hearing that!! The white turkey is from Target years ago π I’ve seen some similar ones here and there, and I did some searching online and found a couple I think are really nice. So I decided to put them all together in a blog post (inspired by you), because others have asked me as well π Stay tuned!

Your home is stunning, so simple and calming. I really love they bowl in the middle cubbie on the top shelf, and the basket with the turkey in it. What is the turkey made of and about what size is it?
Bre says
Thank you so much! The turkey has a terra cotta feel to it. I’m not exactly sure what it’s made of since it’s painted. It’s about 10″ high, and I’m actually putting together a blog post with some similar table top turkeys I’ve found, since mine is no longer available π Stay tuned!
