Is Fall Nesting Really a Thing?

Hi Friends!!

Recently, I had a friend ask me this question over coffee, “Is Fall Nesting Really a Thing?” Without hesitation, I responded with “you better believe it is!” How else do you explain the feeling you get when the days grow shorter and the air turns crisp, and many of us feel the natural pull to retreat indoors and create a space that feels warm and inviting. This seasonal shift is often called fall nesting—a practice of refreshing your home with cozy layers, natural accents, and comforting details that mirror autumn’s beauty. The difference for me is that fall nesting goes beyond simply decorating for the season; it’s about embracing a lifestyle of comfort and connection, where your home becomes a welcoming retreat for cooler months ahead.

Let the Fall Nesting begin ~

As summer begins to fade into fall, I’m ready to embrace that seasonal shift throughout our home as well. I find myself ready to change out the light and airy look of summer for the warmth and comfort of autumn. To me, fall nesting is more than just adding fall decor; it’s about preparing our home with subtle changes like swapping over pillow covers, adding throws, and restyling my decor to reflect the new season we are walking into.

Here are 3 ways that help me start!

Awaken Your Senses ~

First, nothing puts me more in the mood to start transitioning our home than when I awaken my senses with fall’s savory aromas. Sipping on hot cinnamon apple tea or a freshly brewed cup of pumpkin spice coffee is all it takes for me to start warming up to the idea that summer is coming to an end. I walk around our house and collect any candles that have a summer scent, and swap them out with scents of apple and mahogany. Create a fall playlist! A popular classic is Tis’ Autumn by Nat King Cole. It’s a go-to listen for me whenever I’m ready to be put in the mood to begin swapping our homes decor over from summer to fall.

Make a Seasonal Craft ~

Making a seasonal craft can fall under a wide variety of categories. I know I don’t consider myself to be as crafty as some, but I do believe in spending some time creating with your hands. For some of you, it might be a craft or a painting. For others, you might gravitate more towards making a wreath or a fall floral arrangement. Some of you might like to get creative in the kitchen and try a new fall flavored recipe, or return to an old “colder weather” favorite. Heck, maybe it’s just putting together a puzzle of a beautiful fall scene. Whatever your “craft” is, I promise taking the time to make something seasonal related with your hands will help shift your mind as we welcome autumn.

Add Natural Elements ~

Pumpkins, gourds, dried florals, and branches are among my favorite ways to announce that a new season has begun in our home.

First, I go around and collect all my summer-looking faux flowers and greenery. Over the years, I’ve invested in a few realistic-looking faux branches. This can also be helpful if you don’t live in an area where foraging for fall foliage is accessible. Bringing in natural elements, whether foraged or found in a store, helps bring the season inside.

This week on the blog, to celebrate the arrival of Fall, I will be sharing a different idea each day on how I welcome Fall into our home. I will be sharing some key takeaways from my latest book, Making Your Home Meaningful, and to celebrate my latest book and the arrival of Fall, there will be a chance for one lucky winner to receive a gift of some of my favorite handpicked goodies just for fall! So be sure to come back each day for a chance to enter!
