Back Deck Reveal

Hi Friends!

I am so excited to share with you our Back Deck Reveal! I will be the first to tell you that I completely underestimated the impact that this renovation was going to have on the exterior of our home. Maybe that’s because after living with the previous condition of our back deck for three years, your eyes become used to it, and the sore spots that once stuck out no longer do. Our back deck makeover has completely transformed our home’s curb appeal with a blend of classic design elements and modern comfort. Step inside (or rather, step outside) as we reveal the finished porch and all the details that brought it to life.

Come and see ~

The goal of our back deck renovation was to maintain a clean and simple overall look. From removing the pergola to installing new railings in our screened-in porch, I wanted the entire space to feel simple and timeless in its overall design. Looking up at our back deck from the fire pit patio, you can see how we executed this plan.

Here are a few Before & Afters to help you see the transformation that took place.

Removing the pergola and rotting railings really opened up the view of our backyard and this portion of our back deck.

Because we were working with the original framing structure of the screened-in porch, finding a new screen door was proving to be quite difficult, and custom screen doors can be quite costly. My husband decided to build us our own custom screen door, and I painted it Wrought Iron by Benjamin Moore to match our existing exterior doors.

Inside our screened-in porch before, it felt dark and dated with the forest green tile floor and wood railings taking up a lot of the view.

I always envisioned creating more of a conversation seating area on this side of our porch, so the hunt began for comfortable chairs that would create such an environment.

Before

After

I searched high and low looking for the right-sized porch chairs. We needed chairs that were not too deep because our porch is narrow, but we were longing for something wide enough that would be comfortable to sit in, since we love spending time out here. One Saturday morning, my husband and I set out to do the “sit test” in some chairs I had narrowed down my search to. I heard my husband say “how about these ones” through the showroom display area, and turned around to see him rocking in chairs I hadn’t come across before.

They were perfect. Wide enough for them to be comfortable, they also offered a swivel and rocker feature, which is perfect for narrow spaces. Someday, I will swap out the royal blue cushions they came with, as they are a little brighter in person than I would hope for, so for now, I brought in plenty of accessories in lighter colors to help soften the look of the cushions.

I also picked up this wicker table last summer with our back deck makeover in mind. The size was perfect, and the shelves gave me plenty of storage to keep some of my gardening tools close by.

I shopped my home for all the other smaller furniture pieces. Side tables, garden stool, accessories – these were all items I already had. I had been looking for weeks for a small round coffee table, but not seeing anything I loved, I remembered I had inherited this little wooden antique table from a family friend’s beach house they were remodeling a couple of summers ago. I brought it up from the basement, and to my surprise, it fit perfectly on our porch. I gave it a quick coat of paint, and then draped a table cloth over it just to soften the overall look on the porch.

On the opposite side, a DIY daybed swing we built hangs, providing the perfect spot for an afternoon nap.
