New Rug in the Dining Room

08/24/2016 By Bre

I finally pulled the trigger on getting a rug for our dining room. I’ve been contemplating different options for a couple years now. Yes YEARS, you read that right. If I’ve learned anything in design, it’s not to rush the process. Don’t make haste decisions that you aren’t 100% confident in. Not only can you potentially waste money, you waste time and energy on a piece that wasn’t meant to be, and it end up stunting your decision to make the right choice because you live with “good enough” for far too long. I actually had a completely different rug picked out for this room, so let me tell you why I ended up pulling the trigger on not only a different color than my original choice, but also a much bolder pattern!

Here is a picture of our dining room without a rug. We have actually gone without a rug in our dining room for almost 4 years. I know gasp right! It just wasn’t a priority at the time, we spend the majority of our time in our living room, so a lot of energy went into making that space comfortable and cozy. Celebrate Summer Home Tour | Rooms FOR Rent Blog-3443

An added challenge was figuring out the right size since our hearth in the corner comes out at as a semi-circle, an 8 x 10 wouldn’t fit. Now since it is a dining room, and we do eat here, and entertain here, I wanted a rug that could handle a spill here and there. After contemplating for quick a while, and determined not to make the same mistake I had once made in our living room, I decided that a gray and white rugby stripe indoor/outdoor rug from Dash & Albert would work perfectly. Our dining room is primarily gray and white, so while it would definitely match, I ran the risk of having too much gray and white. Is there such a risk? I decided to wait and sit on it so I could be sure this was the right rug for us. Some of my concerns where if something spills on the white part of the stripes, I knew I wouldn’t be able to fully get the stain removed. I’ve always loved the rug I’m about to show you, I’ve even used it in some of my design boards for clients, and a very similar one at this project HERE. So I decided to go a bit more formal, and add a new color to the space, even though it’s still in my wheelhouse. New Dining Room Rug | Rooms FOR Rent Blog

I was also afraid that choosing an extremely casual rug would tip the scale of the decor in our dining room, leaning too much on the casual side. It’s a fine line to balance, but somebody’s gotta do it. Brining a slightly more formal rug (found HERE) into our dining room, than the one I was leaning towards, helps balance the rustic table and bench, along with more casual wicker chairs. New Dining Room Rug | Rooms FOR Rent Blog

Another concern was being too predictable with the color selection. When working with neutral spaces, it’s totally fine to repeat the same colors, but it’s also nice to ground the space with some interest. Staying in my color palette and adding a blue and white rug pops in this otherwise neutral room, and compliments my color scheme throughout the rest of our home. New Dining Room Rug | Rooms FOR Rent Blog

I love how cozy the new rug makes the space feel. It also really anchors our space now, and of course it adds depth to the space by adding another layer to the room. New Dining Room Rug | Rooms FOR Rent Blog

And I’m so excited to share with you that I am teaming up with Wayfair as one of the bloggers in their next round of Vlogger Inspiration starting next week on You Tube. I will be sure to let you know when the first video is live and you can see our new dining room rug in action! Until then!!

That rug looks amazing. I love the texture. Is that a problem when moving your chairs or bench in and out? That is my biggest concern.

Hi Terri! We haven’t had any issues pulling the chairs out around the table. And it seriously is such a comfy rug. Very plush, thanks to all that texture 🙂
