Some of you have asked what the hallway looks like at the bottom of our front staircase when I shared our gallery wall. I had mentioned in the before & after posts, in a desperate hope to keep the original paint color we added some board & batten around the front door and to that little hallway. So today I’m going to share a little tutorial with you on how we did that. [Read more…]
Last week I shared our front staircase and gallery wall. I mentioned in that post why it had taken me so long to share our front hallway, because the lighting was never good, with no windows or direct sunlight in that hallway, it always made for poor picture taking. Not to mention no matter how much I loved the color we painted the hallway when we first moved in, it just made matters worse. So today I’m going to share with you some before & after pictures, because who doesn’t like a good before & after?! [Read more…]
I don’t know about you, but I’m still recovering from the busy weekend. We had so much fun hosting Easter for my family, and no matter how much you prepare I think I practiced Tip #5 from my post last thursday the most : ” Give yourself grace – after all your planning and prepping, don’t forget to sit and enjoy your company”. Along with celebrating Easter, we also had a little milestone of our own over this past weekend. We moved into our house 4 years ago on April 2. [Read more…]
After the last post I shared of our kitchen, with our new runner, I came across some older photos of our kitchen from just after we moved into our house. I know I’ve shared about our kitchen progress before, especially when I shared my design plan to spruce up our kitchen. But when I came across some of the older photos of our kitchen, it really surprised me how much our kitchen looked like it had changed, but we didn’t do a major remodel. So today I’m going to share with you how to decorate your kitchen while keeping it functional. [Read more…]
Just popping in today to share with you a new light fixture we finally got up in the kitchen! I found this green enamel warehouse barn light back in August at a local barn sale, and scooped it up for $24!!! It had a few tiny chips here and there, but FOR REAL, I could not beat the price. I had been wanting a new light over our sink, since just about forever, but was waiting until I found the right one. [Read more…]
Well you all got to see a sneak peak yesterday of the antique buffet we recently got. If you follow me on Instagram you saw my before picture of this and it’s matching hutch. I will be sharing the hutch reveal soon, but for those of you who haven’t seen lets take a look at the before one more time. [Read more…]
It all started last fall. The hubby and I were dreaming about getting a new King sized bed. Well we are still dreaming about it, because we have yet to go out and buy one, although we’ve narrowed down our choice. To prepare for a slightly larger bed than our current queen, in order to still fit our nightstands, we decided to swap our master bedroom around a bit. [Read more…]

I hope you had fun last week if you followed us on Instagram with #inspiremediy . Maybe even inspired enough to tackle your own little DIY project? It has been so much fun seeing those of you who have joined up with us, and the projects you did! Thank you so much for sharing!

So now that all the holiday dust has settled, and all those fun decor posts are done. Back to house stuff!! And onto a few details about our Kitchen Update. And I would like to remind you that other than painting and a few decor changes, there was no major renovation that took place! It’s amazing the power of paint, and how that alone can transform a room. We started off with our main theme to de-brownize the space. While the cabinets are white, every other surface seemed brown, and appeared to take over the room.
So when we moved in it looked like this. Pretty much a blank slate. Since the kitchen was the only room in the house that wasn’t painted yellow, this room was on the bottom of our list to tackle. So we lived with it like this for a 2 years.
Then last January, it was time to start tackling the kitchen. And while I would still love to put in an apron front farmhouse sink, and bead board on the ceiling, and new countertops, and rip up the floor and put wide farmhouse planks down. Those are major projects, and they still aren’t on the top of the list, so I call those project phase 3. I created this mood board as inspiration for an overall feel for the kitchen, and I’m happy to say that we got pretty close. So lets take a closer look at all the changes done for phase 2.
We installed a plate rack wall on an awkward little wall between the basement and bathroom doors. Sadly I do not have a tutorial for this, but we followed this tutorial very closely, with some slight modifications. Basically we cut a giant whole in the wall, and my husband pre-esembeled the whole piece, and then installed it into the vast open whole. And lots of white paint later, you have what you see in the pic below. (This was taken during fall, with a fall chalkboard and leaves, but it gets switched up quite a bit.)
Here is a quick breakout of all the things we added:
New Paint : Horizon by Benjamin Moore
New bead board for Island & Backsplash
New Corbels for shelves and upper cabinets – Home Depot
New Pendant Lights – Lowes, faux finish diy’d here
Matching Bar Stools – IKEA (not found online)
Plate Rack Wall – using mostly this tutorial
Chalkboard Wall – tutorial here
So hopefully that answers most of your questions! And don’t forget to enter the HomeGoods Gift Card giveaway!!
I’m so glad you guys enjoyed our updated kitchen tour. It feels so much brighter, and full of personality. Today I’m going to show you how I painted our pendant lights to resemble weathered, antiqued pendant barn lights. I loved those rustic, perfectly weathered barn lights, but right now they just didn’t fit in our budget. However I didn’t want to sacrifice on look. On a routine quick trip to Lowes, the hubby spotted these, and thought they were close enough to what I was hoping for, and he was right!
I will be back with another post, answering some questions I’ve received about sources, paint color, and more details. I still feel in shock that Thanksgiving is this week, but hope you have a wonderful holiday!
