Sofa Woes

02/13/2013 By Bre

13 Feb
 Insert “WAH” here!
Ok, maybe I should back up first.
So last year I mentioned to the hubby I would like to invest in a nice sofa.
We only have one main living room,
that is our sole place of lounging, hanging out,
and entertaining.
As well as a playground and main hang out for the kids!
We have the IKEA Ektorp, which for lack of better words
“Has served it’s purpose.”
The hubs was never really a fan to begin with because he wanted a bigger one,
basically the size of a full size bed!
I don’t get it, if you want to lay in a “bed-sized” sofa to watch tv, put a tv in your room.
Well that’s how I feel at least ๐Ÿ™‚
So he laughed and said not until the kids were older,
well here we are a year later, and who wants a new sofa?
The Husband!
Crazy, but I was not going to argue.
So now I started looking seriously.
My ONLY requirement is it has to be slip covered.
I like the look, and the fact that I can take the covers off,
even the one over the entire frame and throw it all in the washer!
INSERT = Brand new sofa everytime!
Easy enough right?
Nope ๐Ÿ™
After searching and searching and searching,
here’s what I came up with:
Are we surprised?!? Not really ๐Ÿ™‚
I know what I like, it’s the Pottery Barn Basic, white slip covered,
simple design.
So I like white.. I think we all know this right?
But I thought well it might be nice not to have bright white,
because then it won’t show handprints.
Little ones and big ones,
I’m thinking this might cut back on my washing time,
which is currently just about once a week
( I don’t mind, I just like how nice it looks when it’s done).
So insert = Stone wash.
Still light but slightly darker to hide everyday dirt, and reduce frequently washing.
Then I found this one,
Insert = Mushroom.

I was in LOVE!
Perfect tan -to- grey ratio,
and would certainly be a dirt hider.
So last night we trucked down to the nearest store
to see it in person,
and of course trying to convince the hubs that this one is larger
than our IKEA model, and that the quality will prove
a drastic difference in comfort.
They had five sofas in the store!
And the PB Basic was not one of them ๐Ÿ™
They had the chair, but can someone please explain to me how I’m supposed to
sell my husband on a new sofa with just a chair?!?
And to find out that they are no longer continuing with Mushroom!
Then why the heck is it still an option online!?
Ok well let me back up just a smidge now.
Last week during one of our “sofa” conversations, I’m going over my findings with the hubs,
and the size comes up again.
So his only request is that it is slightly {not greatly} deeper than what we have.
I can understand that ๐Ÿ˜‰
So I tell him well they have a Comfort line, but we’re talking at least $400 more.
At least.
He replies, “I don’t care, it’s worth it to me.”
Ok, now we’re talking.
So back to last night, we walk in, and what does he do, walk right up to the first sofa
he sees sits down and says “I like this one, is this it?”
It’s like when you are looking at cars,
you don’t test drive one that you can’t afford!!
DUH.
Of course he thinks they all look the same,
but little does he know he’s sitting in the PB Comfort Sectional!
Ummmm… mama said nothing about a sectional!
His response: “They are just much comfier than just a sofa.”
Insert = PB Comfort Sectional here:
They know what they’re doing when they set up those stores.
Of course they’re going to put one of they’re comfiest most relaxing sofas right up front.
It was gorgeous, I’m not going to lie,
however,
now we are adding over $2000 for ONE extra cushion.
Just one!
The one pictured above is covered in one of their new spring line
durable canvas’s called
“Silver Taupe”
and I have to say, after seeing it in person, is def. my new favorite,
{sorry Mushroom}
but now we are back at square one!
Insert = WAH here ๐Ÿ™
There is no way we are going to pay $4000 for a couch.
I totally get that “you get what you pay for”,
and I want the quality,
Insert = Why we went to Pottery Barn in the first place.
Even if they are slightly over priced,
if you are going to invest, might as well get what you want while you’re there.
So last night was a major buzz kill,
to say the least,
and the hubs is not sold, especially with the exaggerated price tag.
So it’s back to the drawing board.
Here’s the thing, we are willing to pay the price if it’s worth it,
and for me it just has to be slip covered!
Has TO.
I hate to say it, but I’ve been to too many friends house’s with little kids,
and their upholstered sofa’s are trashed!
YUCK!
So,
Thoughts??? Suggestions???
Where did you get your couch?
Any tips, or places to look?
IKEA and Bob’s are out of the question.
Ok, thanks for letting my go on and on,
and sorry for all the “!!” and “??”
but I’m so bummed ;(
I look forward to hearing what you have to say ๐Ÿ™‚

I don’t know the situation of your current sofa & slip covers, but I have an idea. If you purchased 2 white slipcovers , you could always dye one yourself – a DIY project – w/ RIT dye and have whatever color you choose. Just a thought…

I am very pleased with this sectional small sofa. I wanted an addition to furniture we have already. I have had many compliments on how well the sofa sits and I enjoy lounger myself. The seat cushions are firm and the back though not very high seems to be a good fit for most. The set is most affordable and for the money, you just can’t beat the value. Haven’t dealt with spills or wearing of the fabric but so far I could not be more pleased.

This is a perfect first couch. The size is great for my apartment and it was pretty easy to assemble with the help of a few friends. The coushins aren’t too soft and you dont sink into the couch. Overall, I’m extremely happy with my purchase.

I ‘researched’ for 7 yrs and ignored everyones input. LOVE my white slipcovered PB comfort…however, the reviews said the knife cut back cushions did not keep their form and seemed to fold in half. The reviews were right and my sofa started to look ‘old’.. so i had to improvise and restuff the cushions with other pillows for support. So choose carefully. Read the reviews. Good luck!!

Have you checked Penneys? I’ve read on several blogs that they have similar items to PB’s. In fact, if I remember correctly, one blogger wrote about having her JCP furniture delivered, and PB was listed on the truck! (I might be wrong about this, but it could be worth checking.)

Pottery Barn has outlets, I’ve only been to the Kittery, ME one, but it was huge. Worth a call maybe? Or my friend scored one on Craigslist. Have you tried Circle Furniture? Their Portman Slipcovered Sofa is similar, but I don’t know about cover colors. Good Luck!
