DIY Lampshade Upgrade – Inspire Me DIY

05/26/2014 By Bre

26 May
Back in the fall, we moved our room around. Don’t worry you haven’t missed anything, it has yet to make it to the blog, because quite honestly it just didn’t feel finished to me. I know, not the best excuse, but our room also only gets somewhat decent light at the end of the day, so it’s not the most ideal space to photograph.
For my Inspire Me Diy (#inspiremediy) challenge I decided to give our lampshades a makeover. They were plain white, not even a nice textured fabric on them, so they were lacking a little in the glam department.

In case you are new around here, I L.O.V.E. stripes! It’s pretty much my go – to choice of pattern, and if I think something is lacking that extra touch, I stripe it! And that is just what I had in mind for these lamp shades.

I used frog tape to tape off my stripes, and used the width of the frog tape for my stripe width to make things nice and easy. I began by taping off the top, and then used a small piece of frog tape to move around as my guideline.

While taping off the stripes, I found out that using smaller sections of tape, made it easier because the shade slightly gets larger at the bottom. I made sure to seal any creases, and make sure that there were no gaps.

Once both shades were taped off, it was time to paint. I used a foam brush for nice even coverage, instead of a bristle brush because I didn’t want to see any brush strokes, or see any missed spots once I turned the lamps on.

My favorite thing about painting stripes is once painted, you get to rip the tape off right away.
Who doesn’t like instant gratification!! ๐Ÿ™‚

Here they are in our room after, and it was just enough of change, while making sure the room still stayed soft and serene.

I promise this won’t be the last of our room that you see, I will be back with a full room tour, and all the details on the changes I’ve made, including the painted nightstands. I hope you had fun last week if you followed us on Instagram with #inspiremediy . Maybe even inspired enough to tackle your own little DIY project? It has been so much fun seeing those of you who have joined up with us, and the projects you did! Thank you so much for sharing!

Bre, I just love what you did to the lampshade, subtle but such impact! I most certainly will need to try this on some of my boring lampshades. Love the wood wall behind the bed. Can’t wait to see more.

Oooh, I am so glad you did this. I have a lampshade that I wanted to add navy stripes to but haven’t done anything because I couldn’t work out how to get the tape around it as it is wider at the bottom. Using smaller pieces makes total sense! Thanks!
