It’s no secret I love to layer things. Every corner in our house has the possibility to create a layered look. I think it makes the space feel cozier, more inviting. It really welcomes you in. I love the look of layered rugs, even though some (mostly men) feel it to be unnecessary, I beg to differ. The other fun aspect to layering rugs, is that because the top one is essentially smaller, equalling less expensive, you have the option to switch it up more frequently.

I totally put this into practice when I started decorating our house for Christmas this year. If you caught my inspiration decor post, you may remember me mentioning that I wanted to incorporate a touch of slate blue into our christmas decor this year. I loved the blue and white striped rug I currently had layered in our living room, however it felt a bit summery to me.
It was an indoor/outdoor rug, so it was on the thinner side, and while I still love it, and plan to bring it back in the summer, I wanted something a little heavier for the winter months. I’ve had my eye on THIS rug from Target for probably over a year now. So when it went on sale, I purchased the runner for our kitchen (which was in desperate need of a new one). I loved it so much I went back the next day and bought the 5×7 for our living room, it was love at first sight!
You got to see a few peaks at it in our Holiday Housewalk Christmas tour, but I have a few more photos to share with you today!
It has 2 different shades of gray, and 3 or 4 variations of blue, which ties is so well with our decor. It also has some variations of tan, which I didn’t realize this before, but tie in beautifully with our just rug underneath it.
I feel like in the photos is appears more gray, and while it does have a lot of gray in it, in person it feels more predominantly blue, which I love.
It really helps anchor our trunk coffee table. With the coffee table being on the smaller size, it tends to feel lost placed in the middle of a large neutral rug. However when I layer my rugs it gives it more dimension, and grounds our inherited trunk we use as a coffee table.

I love this rug too and was bummed it didn’t come larger than 5×7. I copied Karianne and put 2 together. Love it in your den layered over the jute rug….so cozy!
