Hello friends!! I have gotten so many questions about my Christmas tree skirt, I wanted to designate a post just to share it! I’ve always love the look of blankets draped around the bottom of a tree skirt vs. a traditional tree skirt. I’m not 100% sure why, but to me it just looks more cozy and relaxed. I’ve used a chunky knit blanket the last few years, and the shop I got it from is no longer in business, but fear not, I have rounded up a few different places you can find them!
Come and see~
I shared our new Christmas tree from Amazon earlier in the week, and promised I would share how I made the platform underneath and wrapped the chunky knit blanket underneath.
Warning, I set my tree up at night, so these photos are not the best, but I wanted to share them anyways, because I’m a visual learner, and sometimes it’s easier to see things when you are explaining them.
Step 1
First I start by building my platform. I used scrap wood from past projects that we had in our basement. First I put a beach towel down to protect my floor, and this also makes it easy to slide the base around once I put the tree in the stand.
First I tested to see how high I wanted to make the platform, to give my tree a little added height. *Tip – I was able to buy a shorter tree, which was less money, knowing that I wanted to put it on risers. This also give me extra room for presents that never seem to fit underneath the tree.* I used 8 pieces of 2×10’s stacked side by side to create the platform. This gave me 8 inches of added height.
Once my platform was secure, I assembled my tree in the stand. Once my tree was all fluffed and put together, it was time to wrap my chunky knit throw blanket around the base.
Step 2
I start by laying the blanket flat on the floor, and fold over one corner. This makes it easier to wrap in a half circle, and gives the “tree skirt” a more casually placed look.
Then I begin by tucking in one corner of the blanket, and wrap the diagonal corner around the opposite side. Creating a faux “apron skirt” in the front of the tree.
My only goal when wrapping the blanket around the platform underneath, is that none of the hard edges from the platform are poking through the blanket. Otherwise, I just try to make sure that things look a little messy, a little less perfect, and oh-so-cozy.
My blanket is around a 42″ x 47″. I have washed it before, so I’m not sure if it shrunk, but it is a throw blanket size, and would be too short to be considered a twin blanket size.
You can see all the details about our Christmas Tree from this year HERE. And as I mentioned in the beginning of the post, the store I got my blanket from is no longer in business, but I rounded up a few I found on Etsy and Amazon below in case you are on the hunt for one yourselves!
