Transitioning Throw Pillows | Christmas Edition

11/18/2019 By Bre

18 Nov

I’ve mentioned it before, but one of the ways I like to transition the decor in my home from season to season is swapping out my throw pillow covers. I actually keep them all in the trunk in our living room that we use as a coffee table, so they are close by when I’m ready to swap things over. This makes it super easy to do a quick change in my decor, without the expense of buying all new pillows every time. So I wanted to share how I transitioned our couch pillows over recently for Christmas.

Fall Home Tour 2019

I mentioned in my fall home tour that one of the ways I like to make seasonal changes, is by adding cozy texture for the cooler months. I begin by doing this in fall, shown above, and carry it all the way through the winter.

Here in New England, we are known for our long winters, so even though it feels icy and cold outside, I want the inside of my home to reflect all the cozy vibes that will keep us warm all winter long.

Before : Fall

Just to refresh, here is the throw pillow combo I had for fall~

Option 1

The first option would be to keep the same throw blanket, and grey pillow that was in the back. I moved it up, and added a larger white knit pillow behind it.

I love the texture from the chunky knit rows in the white throw pillow, and could also use this look for more of a “winter” look, or a neutral holiday feel.

Option 2

For a slightly more festive feel, I kept the chunky white throw pillow, and instead – added a simple white & red knit throw pillow to the mix. Playing off of the green throw blanket, and the simple red stripe in the new throw pillow gives a subtle holiday feel.

Option 3

Making things slightly more festive, I kept the larger 2 pillows the same, but mixed in a holiday plaid lumbar pillow in the front for more of a festive Christmas feel.

You can compare the 2 Christmas pillow combos side-by-side below ~

I listed the sources below for each throw pillow :

  • Subtle Red Stripe Throw Pillow – Purple Rose Home
  • Chunky Knit White Throw Pillow – HomeGoods (similar one found here)
  • Plaid Lumbar Throw Pillow – Pottery Barn
  • Merry & Bright Throw Pillow – With Lavender Grace
  • Green Throw Blanket – Amazon

You can see all 3 options below ~

And one more look on how I transitioned from Fall to Christmas.

I’ll be sharing more of our living room decorated for Christmas this year tomorrow! In the meantime, you can see past years of how I decorated our living room for Christmas below ~

    Hi Bre,

You mention you “swap out throw pillow covers”. Do you have an assortment of pillow sizes and then buy those size covers and swap them out? I would assume you then need to buy covers that have zippeirs so they can be changed easily? Please explain and also where these are purchased?

    Thank you

Yes – I just take off the covers, and put different covers on the inserts I already have. Pretty much all of them have zippers, so it makes it easy to swap them out seasonally. I pretty much only get 20″ and 22″ throw pillows, and can find that size when I’m searching online. H&M and Pottery Barn are my go-to place when I’m looking for a new cover to swap out seasonally, and occasionally Etsy as well. I listed all the sources for the throw pillows I have on my couch in the post above – if you scroll up you will see there are links you can click to be taken directly to the website. 🙂
