Primary Bedroom Before + Design Plan

Hi Friend!!

Today I am sharing the official “before” of our primary bedroom. Even though you have seen glimpse’s of our primary bedroom on the blog before, I’m designating an entire blog post to show you the before, and share a bit of the design plan that I have for this space. I’ve been slowly working in our primary bedroom over this past year (eh’em I said sloooooowly right), as it was one of that spaces I wanted to tackle when I shared my Goals post back in the beginning of the year. It’s so exciting to see some progress, which also means we are finally getting some curtains hung! Can you believe it, after 2 1/2 years we are finally going to hang curtains in our bedroom!

Let me show you the plan ~

Just in case you are new here and haven’t seen our bedroom before, or you don’t remember, here is a little refresher.

When we moved in the walls were already painted this very pretty soft green, which is Grey Mirage by Benjamin Moore. The color itself is beautiful, which is why we weren’t in any hurry to change it. It just isn’t our style. I’m a big believer that the colors you choose to paint in your home should be a personal decision, and I’m ready for this room to feel more like ours.

Below you can see the view when you first walk into our bedroom. We have a long wall, full of very large windows overlooking our backyard. It truly is stunning and a dream come true, but you can imagine how tricky it has been to find window treatments wide enough to cover all the windows when we close them. Our bedroom gets all that lovely (and very bright) morning sun, so you can imagine how nice it will be to finally have some curtains up to help block out some of the early morning light.

One of the things I love most about our bedroom is the vaulted wood ceiling. It makes such a huge impact the moment you walk in the space, I really want to make sure that it remains a focal point in our room.

The Plan

The plan for this phase of the makeover is this – first, do as many cosmetic changes as possible. New paint, hang curtains, change up the throw pillows, hang pictures on the wall. My dresser (not pictured) is also in need of a little makeover so that it will go better with the overall esthetic I want for our bedroom. All the current furniture and bedding came with us from our previous house, and I plan to use most of it with a few little tweaks and adding in some new pieces. These changes will really help the space feel more like us. Then, down the road we can add some of the wall moldings I want, and either build or buy a new slipcovered bed.

The Design Plan

I created this mood board to help me see more clearly all the changes I was envisioning in my head. While the new pieces I get might not be the exact ones I used in the design board above, this helps me stay on track with the overall look and feel I want for our bedroom.

I knew I wanted to paint our bedroom, so I waiting to hang curtains and curtain hardware knowing that was the first step. What I didn’t expect is for it to take me two years to finally get around to it, but alas here we are. I want to paint our room white, since it’s a color that I love (it’s important to choose colors that you love), and second – I loved how our home office felt after I painted it white. We have the same wood ceilings in there as well, and they totally popped once the walls were painted white. You can see that makeover HERE.

I know sometimes it can feel like why bother when it comes to creating a warm space in our bedrooms. Often we can over look them because we tell ourselves “nobody sees that room anyways”, but we do! Our bedrooms should be a place the recharge us at the end of the day, not a catch all for piles of laundry, or a drop zone for things that need to be put away. I love when our bedroom is a place that welcomes us in to rest after a long hard day or week lol, and I can’t wait to create that type of environment in our current bedroom too!

Stay Tuned!
