Hello Friends!
Last fall I shared a design plan post for I wanted to finish our primary bedroom refresh. I had started working on our bedroom last year, slowly making changes, but also being intentional with my choices as I carefully made decisions as to how I wanted our primary bedroom to feel. I’m calling this portion of the refresh “Phase 1”, as I still have much I would like to do to add character and details to our bedroom. And while I haven’t crossed everything off my list just yet, I wanted to share the progress with you so far. So here is phase one completed in our primary bedroom refresh.
Take a look ~

When we first moved in, we set up our bedroom using things we already had. The rug and table lamps that where previously used in our old living room. Our existing headboard and bedding from our previous bedroom. Matching dressers that I had used in our previous home, one in our primary bathroom, the other in our bedroom.
Below is how our bedroom looked from the moment we moved in, right up until I started working on it last year.
I’ve shared before how there was absolutely nothing wrong with our bedroom, the only thing was it didn’t feel like “us”. While I had been slowly making changes throughout the rest of our home to make it feel more like ours, it was time to finally make some changes in our primary bedroom.
I knew we needed curtains, but I didn’t want to go through the trouble of hanging curtain hardware before we painted. So the first change was paint. I painted the walls White Heron by Benjamin Moore which is a warm, soft white. That gave me the neutral backdrop I needed to then make decisions on some of the other changes I was craving.
Now that the walls were painted the curtains could get hung, and what a difference did that make!

After
I chose simple black curtain rods to pop against all the white. I layered a striped rug I was using in our current living room to add a little pattern. Along with a new patterned quilt layered at the end of our bed. I played musical chairs with table lamps I was using in other rooms around our house, and our old dining room bench now flanks the end of our bed.
With the new softer color palette my dresser felt like it was sticking out like a sore thumb. I originally painted it this deep navy blue which worked so well in our previous home, but the darker color felt too harsh with the softer, english cottage feel I was going for. I sanded down the top and stained it walnut color, and painted the base and drawers a soft taupey beige. The color is called “Putty” by Fusion Mineral Paint, and I love the subtle yet warm tones it adds into our room.

You might recognize that mirror from our old house. It used to hang above the sofa in our living room, and was a staple for many years in my Instagram feed. I’m not 100% sure it will stay, but for now it serves as a good place holder until I decide on what I want to hang above my dresser.
Then it was time to focus on this empty corner near our windows. I wanted to create a cozy seating area – a place to sit and read my bible, and journal my thoughts.
The chair, purchased from World Market, came with us, and sat alone in this corner for quite a while. I knew I didn’t want to make any final decisions until curtains got hung.

Thank you Carolyn!! I’m so happy to know seeing our bedroom is inspiring for you! I’m always amazed at the impact small changes can make in how our bedrooms feel ๐

Bre, your bedroom looks absolutely breath-taking. It’s so well designed. How do you EVER get out of bed in the morning? I’d want someone to bring me coffee and a croissant with orange marmelade and lie in bed reading all day if that were my room! Very well done.
Bre says
LOL thanks Michele! I’m not going to lie, waking up to the beautiful view of our back yard and the birds singing in the morning makes it SO hard to get out of bed ๐ But I’m also terrified my son will miss his 6 am school bus pick up, and dread the thought of having to drive him the 30 minutes it takes to get to school ๐ at least I have the weekends!!

It does look like a wonderful and serene area to enjoy being in and sleeping in.

Love the calm feeling in your bedroom. I have tried to do some uncluttered in my primary bedroom but it still need some work. It is a relatively small room and one thing I wish I had room for was a bench or trunk at the end of our bed. It would be so convient for a place for our quilt and pillows from the bed.
I also wish I had a better reading light for reading in bed. Since we bought a new bed with an adjustable matress the reading lights do not work. It may be a matter of just rehanging
them or maybe I can find, some cute ones at an estate sale or thrift store.
Thanks for the photos and ideas. Kathy

Keep at it Kathy ๐ Our previous bedroom was tight on space, and I just kept tweaking and adjusting – reorganzing things to try and maximize our space while also creating a serene haven to retreat too ๐ Praying you find some creative storage solutions, and some lamps that work just right for your room!
