Decorating our Front Steps for Fall

Hi Friend!

Nothing says fall has arrived like a few pumpkins sprinkled on your front steps! I have always loved the look of porch steps filled with potted plants and, of course, pumpkins for fall. It’s a great way to add a warm welcome to friends and family all season long. Today, I’m sharing how I decorated our front steps for fall, along with a few tips for re-creating this no-fail look.

Come and take a look ~

I started by placing two mums in different colors on either side of our front steps. Repeating the same placement on both sides. You can use the same colored mums (like I did) in the same place on both sides, or switch things up. The look you choose to create is up to you.

Notice I staggered my mums on the second step slightly closer to each other. This creates space to place a smaller plant or pumpkin next to them. Slightly offsetting the mums so they aren’t directly in front creates a visual flow for your eye to keep moving while also helping things feel less squished together.

Next, I placed some potted kale on either side at the base of each step, reinforcing my symmetrical design, and a smaller white mum in the empty spot on the step above.

I like to incorporate different-sized plants to help add variation to my overall display. If different-sized potted plants aren’t available, use risers or a taller planter to help stagger the heights.

Once my plants were in place, it was time to fill in around them with pumpkins.

Adding pumpkins that are different shapes and sizes is key for giving your overall design depth. Just like in creating vignettes, different shaped and sized objects help you create visual layers. The same is true when it comes to decorating your front porch steps.

Here is what I used to create this look ~

  • 6 Mums in various sizes (I used 3 on each side of my front steps)
  • 2 Large kale plants + 2 small kale plants
  • 2 Large gourds
  • 1 Large pumpkin
  • 2 Medium sized pumpkins
  • 2 Small pumpkins (or gourds)

Now, you can sit back and enjoy your newly decorated front porch!
