Our New Farmhouse Dining Table

02/10/2014 By Bre

10 Feb
I’m so excited that I get to share our new Dining room table with all of you today! If you follow me on Instagram then you have already gotten to see a few sneak peaks of the process, and finished room.

Now I get to share all the fun with you on here, and give you all the details.

To build the table, the hubby had a pretty good idea of how he wanted to go about it, but we looked through a few tutorials just to make sure we weren’t missing anything, and followed this one primarily.

The legs for the table came from an old table my sister gave me. It was a cute table, but not quite the right style or fit for what we wanted, but I loved the legs. So we took the legs off and then built a frame with them out of 1X4 pine boards. I painted the whole base with Annie Sloan chalk paint in Graphite.  Its a mix between a navy blue and charcoal grey. It’s even more perfect in person!

For the planks on the top, we used five pine 2×8’s, and cut them to the length we wanted. I can add a chair between the two parson chairs (IKEA) and that will give us seating for 8! I knew I wanted the boards to resemble older wood, without using old uneven boards. To accomplish this look I first stained all the boards with Rustoleum “Kona”, which is in the same field as a dark walnut or jacobean.

Just putting stain on the boards brought them to life, but it just didn’t sit quite right with the painted base. The hue’s were just a bit too different. Ultimately I knew that wasn’t my final step, but let it sit for a day just to make sure. Then I lightly sanded the top, just a bit, and roughly sanded all the edges and corners to the point where you could see the fresh wood again. Then I rubbed Rustoleum “Weathered Grey” over all the planks, and that was just what it needed. It gave the wood the grey tone that you see in the photos, that matched the grey hue’s in the graphite paint. It was an instant match, and we both knew that was just what it needed.

I’m 100% sure I’m finished with the bench, right now it sits with just a coat of the same “weather grey” stain on it, but at night almost looks powdered blue, and I’d like to see a little more of a wood tone in it. Not quite as dark as the table top, but just a little less powder blue.

I shopped my house for all of the centerpiece accessories you see here. I have been quarantined to the house for over a week with sick kiddos, so going out to get fresh flowers was not an option. I pulled a few small things off of my kitchen shelves, and the rest I had was sitting in my pile of “overflow” decor, not currently being used.

I grabbed some small white pitchers, white candles, the center vase with faux hydrangeas was from a bookcase in our hallway upstairs. Since I currently only have once woven charger, I placed that in the middle underneath the vase, and finished things off with a small piece of driftwood.

I love the new feel of the room, and it just seems to go so much more with the age and style of our house, and most importantly our style. There are still a few small changes left to be made to the room, mostly a new lighting fixture, and you’ll notice in this last photo that the striped rug is gone. It’s currently in our living room (which I talked about here), but now that this new table is a bit longer, the rug is too small. So down the road I will be on the hunt for one of those. Right now though, I’m still in bliss with the new table, and the kids love to hop up on the bench and do things at the table as well.

Happy Monday!

love, love it. Just painted top of my table gray and also do not want to use a poly coat. Have yo found anything other than the minwax? Didn’t know if the chalk paint wax would do it. Please let me know, thanks.

just painted our kitchen table, but a lighter gray and also do not want to put a poly coat on. Have you since found a protector after using the minwax furniture wax?? I’m afraid of water stains and tomato sauce stains. Love your decorating ideas, and how you change out your table decorations. I’ll be on a roll now looking for changes. Love your house. Thanks

Did you do a wash for ASCP? I love how the wood grain still comes though.

Beautiful dining room!!! You two did a wonderful job with the table and bench…they are great!
Do you have any info about the wall color? It looks as if it has a green tinge, and that is what I am looking for.
Many thanks and blessings to you,
    J

I LOVE this table and the whole room. The color choices for the table top and legs are perfect! Did you seal the top with poly or anything? Just curious. I love the way the white contrast so well with the gray tones and that fireplace is to die for! Also, I commented on another post but I think I forgot to click the notify me button and now I can’t find it ๐Ÿ™ I would love to know what chalkboard paint you used in your kitchen. Great job!

I didn’t use a poly on the top, because I’m not really a fan of the look it gives, so I did rub miniwax furniture wax over the top, however I don’t think it’s too protected, still looking into some options, but for now leaving it like that ๐Ÿ™‚ And I just responded to your paint color comment as well ๐Ÿ™‚ !!

So in love with your house! Table is beautiful and I wondering how the surface of it survived within this two years without poly? I just finishing table and trying to come up with some solution how to protect it from everyday stains etc. Wax was enough? Or you come up with other solutions? Would love to hear your feedback. Thank you!

I love the colors on the table! I especially love the waxed tabletop. I was wondering how it is holding up after 2 years of use. I really don’t want to use poly. I’m getting a table built, but plan to stain & paint it myself.

        Thank you for any advice.

Hi Karen! Thanks so much for stopping by. We are still loving this table, and the wax has held up just fine. It’s easy to wipe clean, it prevents water stains, like circles left from glasses. I did make sure to get a good even coverage, but I am very pleased with how it has held up ๐Ÿ™‚

Thank you for your quick reply. I have one more question. What kind of wax did you use – Annie Sloan? Minwax? Or some other brand.

            Thanks again,
            Karen

Hi Karen! I used Minwax finishing wax. It comes in a can near the poly, but I will say after sample Miss Mustard Seeds wax this year at Haven, that was definitely an easier one to use. Marion’s is more like the texture of butter, Minwax is a hard wax you have to scrape out of the can. Hope that helps ๐Ÿ™‚

So awesome. My to-do list has had a Farmhouse table on it forevvvvvver. I want one for my patio. Badly. Nice score on the legs. Those suckers are expensive if you have to buy new ones. The room looks really great. Four thumbs up.
