Summer Porch Decorating

06/30/2017 By Bre

30 Jun

Hi Friends! I hope your summer is off to a great start and in full swing! Our oldest has been away at his first summer camp all week, and this mama’s heart is going through all sorts of emotions about it. I’m sure it’s been a wonderful week, but I’m dying to hug his neck and hear all about it! With the 4th of July quickly approaching, things finally feel like summer has arrived around here, so I wanted to share with you some front porch decorating I’ve done, and how I subtly add some patriotic flare!

In addition to the pieces I added for our Spring Porch, our rocking chairs come out of hibernation.

This is our FAVORITE spot to sit! And when I say favorite, I mean it. We are constantly sitting our here, gazing out at our yard, sipping on coffee, watching our chickens play. Summer Porch Decorating | Rooms FOR Rent Blog

Our farmers porch runs along the side of our house, which is the length of our living and dining room, providing an entrance right into our kitchen. Summer Porch Decorating | Rooms FOR Rent Blog

I realize I haven’t shown a whole lot of the outside of our house, so I planning on sharing more this summer while everything is nice and green. To give you a glimpse here is the view when you you pull in our driveway. Summer Porch Decorating | Rooms FOR Rent Blog

Our home was built in 1846, and is classified as a “New-Englander Farmhouse”, and yes New-Englander is really a style, lol. While the exterior and windows have all been updated, it still maintains a lot of it’s historical charm. From Memorial Day to Labor Day we have these bunting american flags hanging on the front windows.

It’s one of the subtle patriotic touches I add to our house, but is also the way I declare summer is officially here. Summer Porch Decorating | Rooms FOR Rent Blog

Last year was the first year I made a point to stick with all white flowers, and I really loved the overall look, so I did the same thing again this year too! Summer Porch Decorating | Rooms FOR Rent Blog

Another way I add a subtle patriotic touch is by adding little american flags to my plants. I added two to my boston fern on the porch, and a few more out at our patio areas I’ll show you soon. Summer Porch Decorating | Rooms FOR Rent Blog

These smaller flags were only $1.50 at Target but add just the right touch. Ferns are a go-to for me, because they require very little maintenance – i.e. I can’t kill them, and they don’t require dead-heading, which can prove to take up quite a bit of time depending on how many plants I have. They are a great space filler, and for that I love them!Summer Porch Decorating | Rooms FOR Rent Blog

Muted window pane dish towels I sewed into pillow covers last year are also another way I love adding a summer touch, with the feeling of a picnic blanket plaid, in patriotic white and navy colors.

I finished things off with two large hangers, and a filled the rest of my pots with mostly greens, and more white flowers.

I said it last year, but I’m always surprised at how much adding plants to our porch makes a huge difference. It’s equivalent to adding curtains to a room that never had them before. Instead of feeling cluttered, it makes the space feel cozy and inviting, which in return makes us want to spend every spare minute out there during these summer months.

What a gorgeous porch! A perfect place to sit and relax-read a book, or enjoy a glass of sweet tea.

Your color combination of white walls, black furniture, and natural wood furniture and decor is excellent – it all creates a nice composition when the green plants are added.

Your home is so lovely Bre. I’ve dreaded the whole ‘camp’ thing but will have to let go at some point. Happy summer
