$5 Dresser Re-Do

02/25/2014 By Bre

25 Feb
I was thrilled when we found this dresser at a local yard sale last summer. I’m really blessed that my husband LOVES to yard sale (honestly a lot more than I do) and he is a hard nosed bargainer. I was ready to happily pay the $25 they wanted for the piece, so I send in my “closer” and he sweetly talks her down to $5. I swear it’s because he has dimples, but we will go with mad negotiating skills. You may remember I shared with with you here just before I took some time off for the summer. It was in very rough shape, warped and badly scratched, and barely staying together. My husband took the whole thing apart and restructured the whole piece.

Here is what it looked like Before:
After:
I thought it made the perfect boys dresser, so we are using for our son. I painted the frame Graphite, chalkpaint by Annie Sloan. It is the perfect shade of deep charcoal grey with a hint of navy in it.

I sanded down the top of the dresser and all of the drawer fronts, and stained those dark walnut by Minwax. I wanted to replace the knobs with something a bit industrial with a vintage feel. Because I wanted to keep the cost on this piece low, I really didn’t want to spend more than $5 on a pull.

I found these from Home Depot in their Martha Stewart line on clearance, and thought they would dress this piece up nicely. They are similar to the old catalogue pulls, but sadly I think they discontinued them, because I have searched high and low, and can no longer find them. They were a steal for $1.23 a pull!

You may remember the “rockwood” crate from christmas decorating before, it now serves as a catch all caddy on top of his dresser. Storing books, and puzzles, and his small collection of baseballs. I made the them memo board from an old frame I painted white, and covered the cork with painters drop cloth. The “HD” were my husbands school letters with all of his sports pins in it. My son thinks they are his “medals” and what little boy wouldn’t be proud of his dads athletics.

And lastly you get a little sneak peak of the transformation the kids room has taken. I will be sharing the full reveal soon! Have a great day!

Love the combination of the graphite and dark walnut wood. The pulls are the perfect finishing touch and at such a great price.

I have so many antique pieces that don’t belong together and I’m sick of looking at them in our space, but I just can’t bear the thought of getting rid of them. You have just inspired a whole world of possibilities for me! Thank you! ~Lee πŸ™‚
