Neutral Shared Kids Room Reveal

06/09/2014 By Bre

9 Jun
Just before the holidays, I shared with you some inspiration for kids room. Then life happened, and I never got around to finally showing you on the blog their completed space. If you follow me on Instagram you’ve seen snipits along the way. So today here is their space, 95% completed.

My son (5) and daughter (3) are currently still sharing a room, probably not for too much longer, but while they are I wanted their space to be calm and neutral, one that didn’t really scream “shared-space” but felt like one designed space throughout their room. To refresh your memory this was the design board I created as a starting point for their room.
Here is their room After:
I never took any real photos from the very beginning (pre-blogging), but they had matching white sleigh-bed style crib and toddler bed. But these before pics are during the phase of transitioning my son to a twin bed, while my daughter was still in her crib. Here is how the room looked
Before:
After:
My husband had found, years ago, these antique hand painted Red Sox baseball post cards. They were to represent baseball cards but in a larger size for collectors. I had him choose 9 out of the collection, and we used IKEA frames and hung them under a Hobby Lobby sign that says
EAT. SLEEP. PLAYBALL
Their bedding is both the same, sticking with grey & white, but they each have a tiny throw pillow I made out of a linen table runner, and painted blue stripes for him, and pink stripes for her.
Before:
After:
I say the room is 95% complete because the only thing I have left to get is duvet covers for the ends of their bed, his in navy blue, and hers in petal pink. The white coverlets I found at Home Goods, and after looking for more than 6 months, I was happy to finally find 2 that didn’t have a floral pattern on them, so I wasted no time in grabbing those.
I kept their furniture gender neutral as well. I painted this one for my daughter, and will be sharing more on how I completed this look later this week.
Before:ย
Originally we purchased years ago 2 identical white dressers from IKEA (seen above) for the kids room, but the hubby was in need of more storage, so we played dresser musical chairs last summer, after I finished painting the new ones the kids currently have, and the white ones are now side by side in our room. For my daughters wall, I created a gallery wall, with a large painted sign I made using her favorite Cinderella song “A dream is a wish your heart makes”, and then coordinated the rest of the photos around it, in pink, white & grey. The bunting banner was made out of shabby chic fabric, that I actually used as decor for her 1st birthday, and saved it knowing one day I would want to hang it in her room.
Both kids have a matching trunk at the end of their bed to hold some of their toys,
and their head boards where both painted Graphite by Annie Sloan,
which is a very flat charcoal grey with a hint of navy blue.
Before:
After:
I swapped out the white curtains for some Navy Blue and White ticking stripe ones I got from IKEA about 8 years ago. Originally I had made some wide horizontal stripe curtains like in the mood board, but they ended up in my room instead. You’ve seen this dresser makeover before, to catch up on those details you can check it out here.

Overall I wanted their room to feel fresh, and calm, without screaming kids room by using primary colors which are mostly found in shared spaces. Keeping things neutral is not only a look that’s easy to add too, it’s a look that will last. I included a list of sources below:

Wall Color : Sherwin Williams Jogging Path (lightened by 50%)
Bedding : Sheets – grey + white ticking stripe – Target
White pick-stitch quilts – HomeGoods
Grey Shams – TJMaxx
Checkered bed skirts – Target
White striped throw pillows – DIY
Trunks – IKEA
Curtains – IKEA (no longer available)
Dressers – DIY
Wall Art – IKEA frames, Signs – Custom Doucette Design

What a lovely space! So fun to decorate with special items that can change as their interests do. I think I would love this in my master bedroom as well! What is it about IKEA and their curtains?! Gosh Darn if I hadn’t bought some last year when we had our old house on the market. Even had a couple pairs altered (shorter ceilings) and now when I came full circle at the new house and decided those same curtains would be PERFECT- they are now discontinued! But now I have big ceilings and more windows. lol oh well.

This room is so beautiful. Do you have another space in your house for their toys though?
