Hello Friends!! I shared in my stories on Instagram last week, that as I wrap up taking pictures of our house for my next book, due to out next fall, I’m sort of at that point where I’m ready to cut some bangs. And by bangs, I mean that feeling you get what you’ve just ended a relationship, or had broken up with someone and you want to cut all your hair off! Except in this scenario – the relationship is with my house, and instead of scissors in my hands – I have a paintbrush that’s armed and ready to go. So today on the chopping block is the barn door in our kitchen!
Come and see what color I chose ~
Just to refresh, here is what our barn door looked like in our kitchen before.
The barn door and hardware are from Artisan Hardware. You can check out this post HERE, when we installed it. I choose a medium gray color originally to offset the light gray on our kitchen walls.
I don’t know if I was just craving a change, or my fall nesting took over, where I crave all the cozy dark and moody colors in our home. I figured either way – it’s just paint and I can paint it back if I don’t end up liking it.
The only problem was deciding on which color I wanted to use. I love Peppercorn, from Sherwin Williams. It’s the dark blue/gray we have in our dining room, shown HERE. It’s also the color I chose to paint the shiplap in our downstairs bathroom. So naturally it was the first color that came to mind – especially when I thought about it paired with that warm antique brass barn door hardware.
I started out by painting a sample of it on the top of the door first. I was afraid it might end up feeling a little too dark in our kitchen, especially since this time of the year the sunlight barely makes it over the trees. So to be safe I mixed the Peppercorn with a lighter gray I had on hand, Revere Pewter, and put the two samples side by side.
The only problem was I just couldn’t decide. I know I love the darker shade, because I’ve used it all throughout my house. But something in me was wanting something just slightly different for this door.
To help me in my decision making process, I decided to paint half the door one coat in each of the colors to get a better feel for it in our space.
Something about the slightly lighter shade just felt right. Once I could get a better feel for it on a larger scale I knew what the color had to be.
So I’m calling it Peppercorns “younger sister”. I mixed the two paint colors together with a 75% Peppercorn – 25% Revere Pewter ratio, and the result was just stunning!
Take a look ~
I love how it feels in the rest of the space too. I’m already envisioning my white pom pom wreath hanging over it for Christmas this year ๐
What about you? Have you gotten the itch to paint anything in your home recently? I’d love to hear about it! Be sure to tell me in the comments below ~

I love it! It really transformed your beautiful kitchen. One quick question……did you paint the other side of the door or did you leave it white?
Bre says
Thank you so much Cindy! I didn’t yet, but am planning on it ๐ The other side does just lead to our basement, so you don’t really see it, but just for consistency, I will finish painting it.

Wow, what a difference that color made! Before it just didn’t feel like it went anywhere, the end of your kitchen. Now it feels anchored and warm! I love it. It adds pizzazz!

It really changes the whole look of the kitchen, brings out the wood tones on counter and floor, i love when paint colors do that, make a room look new.
