How to Make a Simple Patriotic Summer Hanging Basket

Hi Friends!!

One of my favorite things about decorating seasonally is finding simple ways to celebrate without completely changing my home. For summer, I love adding little touches that feel timeless rather than overly themed. A basket overflowing with white flowers and a few American flags feels classic, welcoming, and perfectly at home from Memorial Day through Labor Day. The best part? This arrangement only took a few minutes to put together, requires absolutely no watering, and looks just as beautiful hanging on a front door or porch as it does displayed inside the house.

Today I’m sharing exactly how I created this patriotic summer hanging basket using faux geraniums and one simple trick that keeps everything securely in place.

Why I Love Decorating with Hanging Baskets

As much as I love creating a seasonal wreath to decorate my home, hanging baskets have become my go-to lately. They are pretty versatile, take less time to assemble, and are a bit more forgiving when it comes to the overall design. Which makes me a huge fan. They’re wonderful for displaying flowers because they instantly add texture and height while creating a collected, cottage-inspired look.

I recently came across this basket, and instantly fell in love! The size and quality of the wicker alone were enough to have me drooling, but I also knew exactly where I wanted to display it. It felt like the missing piece to our front porch (I’ll share more on that later).

Supplies You’ll Need

  • Hanging wicker basket (found HERE).
  • Faux white geranium stems (found HERE).
  • Chicken wire (found HERE).
  • Wire cutters (found HERE).
  • Small American flags (found HERE).

Step 1: Prep the Basket

The basket already came lined, which gives you the option to use it as a hanging planter or use faux blooms. Since I was using faux flowers, I knew I would need something to help hold them in place so they wouldn’t loosely slide around. My go-to simple trick for keeping faux stems or branches in place – Chicken Wire!

Chicken wire placed inside a wicker hanging basket to hold faux flowers securely for a DIY floral arrangement.

I cut a piece of chicken wire large enough to fit inside the basket and gently pressed it down into place. The chicken wire acts like a floral frog, creating dozens of small openings that hold each stem exactly where you place it. Instead of all the stems falling to one side, everything stays secure while still looking natural. This is one of my favorite tricks anytime I’m arranging faux flowers in a larger container.

Step 2: Add the Faux Geraniums

Once the chicken wire was in place, I began inserting the faux geranium stems one at a time.

Rather than placing them all upright, I angled many of the stems outward so the arrangement looked as though it had been naturally growing inside the basket.

One of the reasons I love faux geraniums is because they’re already naturally full, making it easy to create a lush arrangement without needing dozens of stems. I used 4 bunches of faux geraniums to fill this basket.

As I worked around the basket, I occasionally stepped back to make sure the flowers looked balanced from every angle. I love that these faux geraniums come with varied heights throughout the arrangement to give it a softer, fuller appearance.

Step 3: Finish with American Flags

To give the basket a subtle patriotic feel, I simply tucked several small American flags throughout the flowers.

I didn’t want them to overwhelm the arrangement, so I spaced one on each side, allowing the white geraniums to remain the star of the display.

The combination of natural wicker, crisp white blooms, and classic American flags feels timeless and understated. Perfect for celebrating summer holidays without feeling overly decorated.

Tips for a Natural-Looking Faux Arrangement

The biggest difference between an arrangement that looks artificial and one that feels realistic usually comes down to how it’s styled.

I like to:

  • Bend each stem into a slightly different direction.
  • Let a few blooms naturally spill over the sides.
  • Keep some flowers sitting slightly lower than others.
  • Avoid making the arrangement perfectly symmetrical.
  • Mix the flags in casually rather than placing them in perfectly even rows.

Those little imperfections make everything feel much more lifelike.

Bringing Summer Home

Decorating for the seasons doesn’t have to mean filling every corner with themed décor. Sometimes it’s the simplest touches—a basket overflowing with white flowers, a few American flags, and warm natural textures—that help your home feel ready for the season.

This arrangement came together in just a few minutes, but it instantly makes our home feel ready for all the summer gatherings, backyard barbecues, and holidays ahead. I love creating decorating ideas like this because they’re easy to recreate, can be enjoyed year after year, and remind us that making a home beautiful is often found in the simplest details.

I hope this inspires you to gather a few faux flowers, pull out a favorite basket, and create something beautiful for your own home this summer.
