2014 Spring Mantle

03/05/2014 By Bre

5 Mar
As I type this it’s snowing! Yes, snowing, which I know most of you are dealing with as well, so while there is no sign of spring outside what-so-ever, I have begun to swap things over in our house. I flooded my table with spring flowers, and oh my gosh it totally captures you when you walk in the room, however because of all the snow outside still, I’m afraid people will think someone died, and I took all the flowers home from the funeral! Well, NO, no one died, I’m just boycotting winter at this point. You can see our mantle here in the dining room, behind our table.
I’m going to be honest with you, I love having a wood stove, but I can’t stand my mantle. It’s my arch nemesis! FOR REAL! Ugh it’s the last place on earth I want to decorate, but the first place you see as you turn the corner from our kitchen to come into the rest of the house :/ We have an ongoing battle, that I might have shared possibly with you before.

Don’t get me wrong I picked everything out for our hearth and mantle. The look, the color, the material, but there is one thing I did not pick, the height!! Ugh, it gets me every time. It’s not quite as bad in person, and everyone comments on how nicely it fits the house, but in order to install things to code, for heat clearance it has to be this high. Which for me, it might as well of just gone to the ceiling!! But I feared it would feel too log cabiny.

The height above the actual mantle maybe 30″, which means no height for tall objects, layering frames, ohh the list of design dilemma goes on. So I make do, as much as it pains me, and it’s probably why I don’t jump on swapping a lot of things out. It’s hard to find the right balance with limited choices.

Aside from adding the few touches of spring you do see, I recently printed out a few of my favorite labels I found on Pinterest. At first I had this “HORNS Brewing”label print on the middle black shelf across the room. It worked but was a little too small for the space.

I swapped it with the “No.4 winery” print you see below. The frame on this one was a bit bigger, and seemed to fit the space a little more proportionate.

I haven’t completely over taken the shelves in spring form, mostly because I like to use a lot of the forsythia branches (like here) from our front yard, and those are still buried in snow. I added a few faux florals and some small amounts of moss to do the trick for now.

Once I placed the “Horns” print over here, the black in it complimented the black in the “cow-pig” print in the middle of the mantle. So slowly with tweaking here and there, it starts to feel a bit more complete.

Don’t forget there is still time to enter the $300 Pottery Barn Giftcard Giveaway, you can click here to enter. And I hope you have enjoyed seeing spring pop up through the Seasons of Home tour. These ladies do not disappoint, and I will be back on Friday to show you the rest of the spring touches I’ve added to the house.

See you Soon!
