I don’t know about you, but every spring I can’t wait to get outside and start freshening up our outdoor spaces. Our front porch in particular is one of the first areas I tackle since we use this as our main entrance to the house. I can’t wait to take down the winter decor I had out there and clean the entire area. Not only does it look better once it’s cleaned, but it really makes our entryway feel fresh for spring! Since I’m in the process of doing this to our own front porch right now, I wanted to share my thoughts with you as well!
I’ve shared our farmers porch before, above you can see it decorated for summer, and while I’m not ready to fill my planters just yet, I do like to get a lot of the preliminary work done so that it’s all set for when I am ready for to add plants.
I used to not care as much about the outside of our house, thinking as long as the inside looked nice, than who cared what the outside looked like. And then I realized the impact a first impression can have on your home, and the difference it can make to all who enter.
I realized that when the outside looked warm and inviting, you anticipated going inside that much more! It’s like you are setting the tone for your guests experience before they even set foot in your house. I know I’m not the only one who has smiled when greeted by a cheerful wreath on someones front door, or a seasonal garland during the holidays. It instantly uplifts you, and you anticipate the good time you are about to have with whoever you are visiting with.
Whether you have a front porch, a front stoop, or simply a front door, refreshing your entryway can make a big impact on how you view your home, and I’m not just talking about how it will make your guests feel, it will make you feel more welcome too!
This past fall I repainted all of our exterior doors, shown HERE. And this spring I plan on repainting all of our white trim a fresh coat of white. I’ve learned that maintenance can really go a long way in preserving your curb appeal, and while it’s not always a task that I love doing, it’s better than being cooped up inside!
When I start to refresh our front porch there are a few things I do right away. Remove any lasting winter decor, and wash down the entire area. I break out the hose, and turn up the music, and start cleaning. Every spring I buy a new welcome mat. It’s a must, because the old one that’s made it through the winter is not very welcoming anymore. Next I grab a fresh wreath or wall hanging for my door.
This spring I decided to refresh a hanging basket and fill it with faux greens, and I have to say – I am LOVING it! The best part is I plan to leave it up all summer long too!
Once I have my key pieces refreshed, I start thinking about planters and any other accessories I might want to add. We are in the process of replacing our exterior lights with THESE gooseneck barn lights, and I’m so excited! I also want to get some new house numbers, and THIS cute welcome sign to go next to our kitchen door. I can’t wait to share our spring porch with you, and tomorrow I will be sharing 8 different ideas to refresh your front porch for spring.
Here are 5 Tips to keep in mind –
- To keep things simple, think about the colors you want to incorporate.
- What would esthetically compliment the exterior of your home currently?
- How much space do you have? Remember – Porch, Stoop, or just the Door?
- Never underestimate the power of a new welcome mat – NEVER!
- Finally, Don’t forget the green! Whenever I incorporate some plants, whether they are real or faux it always makes things feel warmer.

such a sweet welcome sign! but it is on the small side; how will you incorporate it into the area without it getting “lost”?

I will be sure to share the photos once it’s up! It’s actually the exact size I need for the space I’m putting it in 🙂
