New Paint Color in the Kitchen & New Wall Decor

03/26/2014 By Bre

26 Mar

I know what you’re thinking?! Didn’t she just paint her kitchen a new color, um yes I did, but believe it or not it’s been a year. I used that to justify my new color. I wasn’t even planning on painting the kitchen, and one day while I was walking into the kitchen I envisioned it being light gray. Out of no where the thought just popped into my head. With all the white and warm wood, and grey tones, it seemed like it just went better. Here’s what it looked like before:

You can see here when I revealed the first kitchen update. The new paint color I chose was Horizon by Ben Moore, which is what you see in the photo above. I loved it, but after living with it there was too much of a powder blue hue that came through. I wanted something with just a touch of light blue, and this was just that. But sometimes you can love a color and it just doesn’t fit the house.
You know?!
I knew the shade of gray I was looking for, but of course couldn’t find the pin I had saved, so I went to you guys. So many of you weighed in on Instagram, and I am forever grateful!! Thank you so much for your help, it made my deciding process SO much easier. I ended up getting Grey Owl by Ben Moore, and had debated lighting it by 50%, but after I got the first coat up and let it dry, it was perfect just as it was!
After:
So here is the tricky thing. If you are scrolling back and forth and thinking to yourself “There really isn’t much of a difference?” You’re right! There isn’t. I wanted the same shade of color, just without the blue. It’s hard to see the full difference in the pictures, but when you are here throughout the day, as the light changes in the room, you can totally see the difference.

These shelves are still my favorite part of the kitchen, I’ve tweaked them a little bit since their first debut, and I’m sure I will still change out some of the smaller items. A new item that was added is this adorable cow print. I got the cow print and the coffee print you will see above our bench seat below from Jen’s Etsy shop at My Fabulous Life.

In the photo below you get a better feel for the Grey Owl, and I am loving that it makes all the white pop just that much more!
The large frame on the bottom, the hubby made for me out of old trim boards from our house, and then I sanded all the paint off of it. The print inside is also from Jen’s Etsy shop, it reads:
“If you bring me coffee without having to ask, then i LOVE you”.
We love our coffee here! Like L.O.V.E. I had found this cute little sign at HomeGoods a little while back, and couldn’t resist because the saying fit our home so well.
This sign lives next to our coffee pot, and always brings a smile to my face while I’m waiting for my coffee to finish ๐Ÿ™‚ The framed sign behind it was a logo I found online, and loved the farmhouse look, so I printed it out on photo paper and framed it with a weathered wood frame from HomeGoods. My little stirring spoons are from good friends of ours that live in the Netherlands, each spoon has a landmark symbol on top, and they always spark up conversation.
Below you can see the new gray paint above the bakery sign and I love how the subtle wood tones throughout the kitchen look with it as well. I love how the striped wall in the bathroom peaks out too.

Sometimes in design it take a few times before you get it right. You have to be willing to take chances, and try new things until it fits just right. For me, this was so true in the case of the kitchen paint color. And I’m so glad I didn’t talk myself out of it because I had just painted the kitchen not too long ago. The key to “Loving the space you Live in” is to truly Love everything in the space. Sometimes you can like something a lot, and love some other things, but if you love everything in your space, than it feels truly complete. If you caught my home tour at Beneath My Heart yesterday than you got to see a few of these photos already, and if you haven’t visited Traci’s blog yet, be sure to stop by and say HI!

Your kitchen looks fabulous! I love your glass canisters! I’ve been looking for some but can’t decide on the size. Are yours 1-gallon or 2-gallon?

I love your kitchen style and the open shelves that I want so badly. The gray is perfect. I know all about taking a few times to get it right.

Your kitchen looks awesome! I love that even with the neutrals there is lots of texture and interest. I just painted our main floor half bath Benjamin Moore Grey Owl and love it. It is a room with no windows and little natural light from the hall and I too was tempted to cut it by 50% but tried it as is and I’m very happy with it. You are so right about some paints looking different at certain times and sometimes it isn’t until you live with it for a bit that it is more noticeable. Thanks for sharing photos of your lovely room.
